The Most Common Cooking Mistakes

By Miss Cellania in Food & Drink on Feb 24, 2012 at 10:05 am

Cooking Light published a list of cooking mistakes that seems to be a powerful resource for novice cooks. The first few are exactly the mistakes my young daughters make.

1. You don’t taste as you go.
2. You don’t read the entire recipe before you start cooking.
3. You make unwise substitutions in baking.
4. You boil when you should simmer.

There are 41 mistakes in all, and many of them are very specific. Each has advice for the right way to do it. Link  -via Metafilter

(Image from: Mefite inigo2, who said his biggest mistake was to leave his cockatiel near the chocolate fountain. He also updated by telling where he got the images.)

I know no one saw it, but according to a redditor yesterday, the bird thing is from Adam Sandler’s Jack & Jill. I’m sure inigo2 worked very hard to acquire the screenshot, though.

Oh man — please also link my followup comment where I clarify where it came from:

I totally meant to quote the person saying “Need. images. Now.” Kinda figured people had already seen the image already, to be honest.

Done. I heard about this movie, and therefore did not see it.

Some of those I do agree on, however some I disagree with. Like what if you like the bacon the way they show as wrong or the rice? Follow the tips but cook the way you like it, don’t worry about trends. Example not well cooked pork is the trend but I still couldn’t stomach it…

That is not a cockatiel, that’s a cockatoo.

It looks like a plush cockatoo which is good because that would have ruined its feathers.

Re #13. You don’t get the pan hot enough before you add the food. For the longest time I used to test if the pan was hot enough with my index finger. Until in my mid20′s I started sharing a house with a friend who was a great cook, she was horrified.
