Mysterious Sphere Falls from Space

By John Farrier in Science & Tech on Dec 22, 2011 at 3:00 pm

For a few days, people living in a remote area of Namibia heard strange explosions. Then they found this sphere, which is about 14 inches in diameter, in an impact crater about 12 feet across. What is it for? Who does it belong to? So far, it has yet to extinguish all life on earth, but puzzled authorities are investigating. In the comments, write your own hypotheses about the origins and purposes of this sphere.

I think someone let the Mythbusters have their cannon back.

The article from your link says that the circumference is 43 inches, and the diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches).

I don’t have a guess as to what it could be, but Google Images seems to think it’s a Cachorro Yorkshire Terrier, and that’s good enough for me.

My brother-in-law thinks it’s part of the first human spaceflight module, Vostok 1.

If you look at the middle of Vostok 1, you can see the smaller balls encircling it.

The Vostok spheres are about 25 inches, so they are too small. Though I do think that it is probably in the right vein of being probably a spacecraft or satellite fluid tank.

Vostok 1 looks like something from Doctor Who.

Speaking of, the Doctor would know the answer :(

“Then they found this sphere, which about 43 inches in diameter”

“a giant metallic ball, 1.1 metre in diameter”

“The hollow ball with a circumference of 1.1 metres (43 inches)”

“With a diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches)”

Somewhere, a geometry teacher is crying.

Apparently it is a helium tank from a Russian space craft. The mystery was solved in the comments section of the other website.

Looks like a “Rail Gun” projectile to me……….the opposite nodes may help in stabilizing . YouTube ” Rail Gun” …they`re funky and would leave craters that size given the hectic velocities claimed.
