Guess Who These Guys Are

By Miss Cellania in Pictures on Jul 31, 2011 at 5:36 am

Do you recognize them? You can highlight the following invisible text for a spoiler, or go to the link for the full story. Or both. (RSS text is not invisible)

In this 1960 photograph, the seven original Mercury astronauts participate in U.S. Air Force survival training exercises at Stead Air Force Base in Nevada. Pictured from left to right are: L. Gordon Cooper, M. Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Alan Shepard, Virgil I. Grissom, Walter Schirra and Donald K. Slayton.

Even telling you what website the link goes to would be spoil the surprise, but it’s a site we’ve sent you to before. Link -via Nag on the Lake

Not sure how it puts a lie to racial profiling. I thought showed a little more about the temper of the time, and that they felt it wouldn’t be offensive to dress like that.
But really, that guy should really clean his underwear.

And no, they were not being racially offensive. They were taught to use their parachutes to construct practical clothing for the environment they were in.

When I first saw this, I looked at the faces and expected to recognize a rock band. The quality of the color and the lack of any time period reference caused me to be surprised at how old the picture is.

I recognized Gus Grissom. :) Mike Collins, in his book Carrying the Fire, talks about their survival training in which they were dumped into inhospitable environments and had to make due with the equipment they had and their surroundings. Poor guy had bug bites on his butt for weeks after a stint in the jungle. (They spent most of their time going after heart of palms to eat.)

Gus Grissom had a really distinctive face. Knew they were Mercury/Gemini astronauts from his face :D
