How to Test for Nearsightedness: Do You See Einstein or Marilyn Monroe?

By John Farrier in Health, Living on Jul 24, 2011 at 7:38 pm

Here’s a clever test developed by Dr. Aude Oliva, a cognitive scientist at MIT. If you see Marilyn Monroe instead of Albert Einstein, you’re a bit nearsighted. I don’t see any indication that this what Oliva was trying to do, but it does serve that purpose nicely. Link -via Ace of Spades HQ

If you wear glasses, take them off for the test.. With my glasses I see Albert, without, Marilyn. Not surprising as I’m more than just a little nearsighted.

With my glasses, I see Albert. Without them, I see Albert in drag.

I’m definitely near sighted (I need glasses to see clearly beyond arms length) and I clearly see Albert w/o my glasses on.

    Hmmmm…..

    Glasses on = Albert
Glasses off = a blob somewhat resembling Marilyn

    With glasses – Einstein
Without glasses – where’d the computer go?

I’m just a little nearsighted, so I don’t see Marilyn unless I walk a few meters from the computer. I asked my mother, with a much worse sight than mine, whose picture it was, and she saw Marylin. She could see Einstein if she put her head right next to the screen, though.

    Neat.

My prescription is -4 and yet without my glasses I see Albert…

Oh if I push the screen back I see Marilyn.

I’ve got contacts on so I can’t test it without glasses, but I have a feeling that at -7 I would only be seeing a white smoky blob…

    Without glasses -Albert
With glasses -Albert (through both near and far lenses)
Squint my eyes -Marilyn with a mustache

What does it mean if you see Einstein with Marilyn’s hair?

I suppose this is useful for people who are in complete denial that they are nearsighted but are able to fake their way though recognizing blurry letter shapes.

By the time I back up enough to see Marilyn, everything’s so out of focus that I can only recognize the pattern as vaguely face-like.

I see exactly what Miss Celania sees. I’ve got to severly squint my eyes to see Marilyn.

Stating that this is a nearsightedness test may be in good humour, but it could mislead a lot of people.

Awesome! With glasses – Albert; Without Glasses – a very fuzzy Marilyn. Can’t believe that worked.

That is the FREAKIEST thing I’ve ever seen. Glasses on Albert… glasses off, Marilyn. THANKS for this.

    Haha, great!

    With glasses: Einstein

Without: Marilyn with a big mustache

A pair of footsteps away from the desk: Marilyn clearly feminine without any mustache.
