Man in a Blizzard

Man in a Blizzard, also possibly at one time called Idiot with a Tripod, is Jamie Stuart’s observations during the blizzard that hit New York City. It was filmed on Saturday, edited in almost no time, uploaded to YouTube Sunday, and earned a great review from Roger Ebert.

This film deserves to win the Academy Award for best live-action short subject.
(1) Because of its wonderful quality. (2) Because of its role as homage. It is directly inspired by Dziga Vertov’s 1929 silent classic “Man With a Movie Camera.” (3) Because it represents an almost unbelievable technical proficiency.

This is great! I missed the blizzard as I was out in CA for Christmas, and coming home to the slushy aftermath is never as fun as being here when it happens.

I want to know what the street crews were thinking. I know they watch the news and I know the weatherppl said that snow was coming–so why didn’t the crews salt/sand the streets Friday night?? I can’t imagine they were so determined to get the last bit of Christmas shopping in that they ignored their duty to the city.

This storm didn’t hit NYC until Sunday.

Had it happened in the Midwest, it would have been a minor news story. Every time it rains or snows, the Northeast acts like it’s the end of the world. Wussies.

I’m glad he showed the dog finally moving around a little, I started wondering if he had gotten frozen in place!

Absolutely beautiful. I couldn’t believe how many people were actually out in such weather. Loved the music. I too was worried about the dog, glad when it finally moved. Thanks for posting.

Very nice! I found an HD version up on Vimeo which I suggest watching for the full experience. A lot of subtleties, including the falling snow, are all but lost in the YouTube compression artifacts.
