The Cardboard Box That Will Fit Anything

By John Farrier in Gadgets, Hacks & Mods on Apr 20, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Patrick Sung has developed a cardboard box that he claims fit over just about any object. It’s called the Universal Packaging System and folds along triangular sections. More pictures at the link.

There have been many, many times in my life that I could have used one of these boxes.

ok… but the rigidity of the corrugated fiber board will be completely compromised. the prevalence of square boxes is as such because they are easily stackable and tend not to collapse.

if you take a cardboard (technically corrugated fiber board) box apart you’ll see that the flutes run vertically. that’s no accident. the board is about 10x stronger vertically than if the flutes ran perpendicularly.

UPS/Fedex charges less if you ‘wrap’ your shipment. So tires, buckets, and other strange shapes merely need a cardboard skin to avoid costly additional fees. The cardboard isn’t meant to be protective of those sorts of things.

What nutbastard said: the invention is good if you want to cover something, but not if you want to protect something from mechanical stress. And if you only want to cover something you already have several solutions at hand, such as plastic bags, cling wrap, or even plain old paper.

Looks like they are promoting it as a “must-have” item if you need to make an inconspicuous midnight dump into the river.

The link to this story states that, “the patterns make it easy to fold and conform to almost any shape while maintaining structural rigidity and protecting the contents.”

    Pragmatic. Me like.
