(YouTube link)

Shelter dog Edie was schedule to be euthanized. She was fearful, aggressive, and hard to control. Then Bronwyne Mirkovich gave her another chance as he and Eldad Hagar recorded the process on video. -via reddit

Update: Edie has been adopted and is in her permanent home.

That was wonderful, crying while typing here (sniff, sniff). Would love to have a Neatorama follow up that Edie has been adopted and gets lots of hugs everyday!

So I’m the only one who thought it was too long and had cheesy music? :|

Yup I cried too at “first wag!” I’m sure if Edie hasn’t already been adopted, she’ll have a new permanent home in no time :)

What a sweet, scared little girl. She was so happy in the end! *sniff, sniff*

She must have been living on the streets or been seriously neglected, with her fur being in clumps like that. :(

Too bad stephbot completely missed the point of the video. Cheesy music or not the message was very powerful – ALL dogs deserve a chance!!!

You should really watch all of the videos he has posted. It’s heartbreaking the conditions some of these dogs are in when he rescues them.
Nice to know that there are people like this out there.

    Cheezy music – check.
    Overly slow – check.
Spending tons of time and resources to save dogs – check

Not giving a rats b*tt about the 10 homeless fellow humans you passed on the street on your way to work – priceless

Oh geez, lighten up fella, people are capable of helping animals without being guilty of neglecting other humans. It’s faaar more likely that someone who can empathize with a bedraggled little mutt who tries to bite you when you touch it, will also be able to empathize with a fellow person who may or may not be in the best or most appealing condition either.

ok, so I got a little moist in the eyes, too. Pretty special to see.

You really shouldn’t promote the misconceptions people have about dog behavior. The “tail wag” wasn’t joy, it was part of a submissive display. You should never “hug” a scared dog, and dogs covered in mats like that are probably going to be uncomfortable and snippy. Looks neglected or like it got lost.

A huge reason why dogs end up in the shelter in the first place is the shocking lack of education on the basics of dog behavior and training. If this video made you cry, if you think hugging dogs is a good way to interact, and that all tail wags are happy wags, I recommend re-educating yourself about dogs and spreading good knowledge. The vast majority of dogs in the shelter are there because they are untrained, and because their owners only know the myths they were taught.

Fucking assholes who think it’s ok to simply kill a dog. The same hypocrites probably would flip out at the notion of euthanizing a human being, even though they can consent to it.

Guarantee this dog was only fearful and aggressive because it was mistreated. “We turned you into a wreck and now we’re going to kill you for it.”

I hope that dog has found a good home for life.

    Mar 16th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

And God forbid we be happy about a dog who’ll get to survive and have a chance at a happy home because it displays the submissive behavior required in good pets toward their owners.

Ouch, Julie! I get it, a dog lives; hooray. The video ITSELF is poor, not necessarily the CONTENTS.

JJ, if you look closely at the video, Edie hugs Eldad. When she puts her head into the crook of his arm, he closes his arms over her. It was the most natural act in the world and she was soothed by it — how do I know? — I was there and I shot the video. I also saw her in the cage at the shelter and rescued her. Rescue is seat of the pants stuff – never common sense…each time my heart is racing, trying hard not to lose it with the staff banging on her cage. They wouldn’t let me near her to assess her for liability reasons. The first time I can interact is when Eldad opens the crate. When you are in the trenches, and you have little time to save a precious life, you do your best. I too have training in training dogs, and I can tell you that in the face of dogs like Edie, a naturally gifted person like Eldad can make the difference. I will be posting a follow up video of Edie and I can tell you that Eldad’s soothing of her worked perfectly. She has been a love bug since her meltdown, running with my six other fosters and snuggling with me. Gut JJ. Pure gut and experience with working with fearful, injured, neglected animals.

Such a wonderful video! Sure you can point out you never hold a scared dog, but let’s face it – animals aren’t robots. Even if certain training methods work 99% of the time, there’s always the 1% that requires something different. And look at the final product: a happy, healthy, relaxed dog!

    1st Rate Tearjerker.
    And very True.

Yhis tells all about the failure of humans and the hope there is fore some victims of those failed humans.

This also goes for a lot of humans in that they have gone bad because of the lack of sympathy and the right amount of attention by their parents and other adults around them.

    So sad………..

    Thanks for the vid.

I love it when a dog gets saved. Nicely done…… And to the folks below that want to criticize what was done for Edie….. Go pound salt. Great Job by Bronwyne and Eldad.

Why I’d help a dog before a homeless person:
Homeless person has squandered and misused every oppertunity given to turn their situation around and continues to do so by not taking advantage of state/fed resources for homeless people.
Dog has done nothing wrong, except being a dog. Possibly in a way their owner did not like (chewing, poo’ing, barking).
