A “Day At The Deeps”

By Minnesotastan in Video Clips on Feb 24, 2010 at 11:49 am

The video depicts children in Duluth, Minnesota, jumping into a pool in a rocky crevasse.  Locally known as “The Deeps,” what is often mistaken for a quarry in still photos is actually a natural basalt formation at Amity Falls in Lester Park.  Some techniques for accessing the water require jumping a considerable horizontal distance.

Via Shorpy, where a  link to the video was posted in a comment on a still photo of the same site being used by theoretically-NSFW naked children a century ago.

When the one kid dives in headfirst, my mouth dropped open. I almost couldn’t look.

That Shorpy photo is of extraordinary quality of you click through to the full size copy. However much I like digital photography, large-format film had a lot to offer.

That photo was made on glass, not film. Much sharper.

Skip, thanks for the reminder. I forgot to include the link to the old photo. Fixed.

    That was a beautiful dive.
The almost cannonball started off well.
    Duluth, MN, eh? Hmmm…

This sort of thing is so much fun. I love jumping off waterfalls (after scouting out the place to dive into first, of course).

There’s a similar place called punchbowl falls on an incredible waterfall filled hike in Oregon. I jumped off it last summer…with my friend’s brand new digital camera in my pocket. Oops :(
