Vans and the places they were

“Vans and the places where they were” is a project by filmmaker/photographer Joe Stevens that artfully presents… a bunch of vans. Each photo frames the subject identically, yet the vans and the locales are various, shot over the course of 13 years and counting.

Vans and the places where they were documents surviving custom and conversion vans across the West and examines the dialogue which exists between a van’s design aesthetic and that of its surrounding environment. The project began in 1996 and currently consists of hundreds of images shot on 120mm film.

I’m sure there’s some way we could solve global warming by insisting this artist has better things to do with his time and money.

This would be far cooler if the vans were in places other than South California.

    Cola really? I mean REALLY??

Why don’t we all just quit doing anything of fun whatsoever and just live in mud huts and wear buckskin outfits.

I’m sure we can collect every polluting device ever built and recycle them all into giant wind turbines to power our tofu factories.

Why don’t you crawl into a handwoven hemp sack and suffocate on your organic granola farts.

    Sincerely your pal,
    Scott

Vans are about the creepiest things ever. Total serial killer vibe.

I disagree, Geekazoid. I am reminded of good old fashioned fun times and The A-Team. Bubble windows ftw.

Wow Scott. Apparently I should have shelled out for the sarcasm punctuation.

Looks like this was a better idea than we initially thought.

How much do I hate sideways-scrolling websites?

Enough not to finish scrolling to the side, certainly.

While some of the vans are cool, many give off the serial killer vibe as geekazoid pointed out. Kind of a yawn though, if it weren’t for that serial killer aspect.

Oh man, back in college I had a van with a sleeper compartment. The best vehicle for a college student. I lived out of that thing.

Look, I may have been a little overly defensive with my prior comment. I happen to be somewhat attached to old Boogie Vans.

If it wasn’t for late 70′s Dodge vans and camping trips I wouldn’t have been born…

    As always,
    Scott

“Like a picture she was layin’ there
    Moonlight dancin’ off her hair
She woke up and took me by the hand
She’s gonna love me in my Chevy van
And that’s all right with me”

Maybe they should change the title to “Vans owned by Mexicans in L.A.”. Looks like the ones we use to have, back in the day anyways.Brings back some good memories. I bet you most of those vans have or had 8 tracks and c.b. radios. I know ours did.
