The Birth of The Golden Girls

By John Farrier in Art on Jan 29, 2010 at 9:05 pm

Pop artist Sam Carter’s Birth of Zbornak is inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus as well as the TV show The Golden Girls. The recently passed Bea Arthur is featured at the center in her role as Dorothy Zbornak. The painting is quite detailed, and if you’re foolhardy enough to look at an enlarged image, you can even observe the varicose veins on her legs.

I am somewhat turned on by a nude Bea Arthur. Heaven only knows why.

This sort of thing is disgraceful to true art.
I don’t find it humorous at all.
    It’s not clever.

all TV is subtle mind control
    switch it off
examine other people watching it as they stare at the screen like zombies
watch as life passes them by while staring into a box

free yourself from the lizard controllers.

this work and idea are relatively weak. Bea Arthur has been done much better by John Currin.

“Weak” is the exact word for it.

Although on could say “irrelevant, derivative, unoriginal, uninteresting”, too.

I’m waiting for someone to parody Jacques-Louis David.

How dare you call it weak, uninteresting and unoriginal; it’s so rude. And where do you get off talking about “true art” like some kind of ponce? Though I’m not familiar with the golden girls I think it’s a great caricature (probably). What if it were you drawn naked in a clam? If you had any sense of humour at all you’d find it hilarious.

Tacky…. true art…. whatever… My money is on the bet that could Bea see this, she would LOVE it… I’m sure Betty White would as well…
