30 vs 30,000

A few years ago, Alex ran a post on the Japanese hornet, a particularly large and “mean flying machine.”   As pointed out, the hornets prey on smaller honeybees, but can often be baked alive by a swarm.  Interesting, but that’s not what happens here as 30 hornets lay waste to a colony of 30,000 bees.

I heard they were researching the possibilities of using them to quell killer bee populations, but I’m sure if they ever do decide that, it will be after extensive observation because it’s well documented that introducing foreign species can have drastic effects on an environment.

I am by no means an expert, but I believe it is the Japanese honeybee that bakes them alive by surrounding them and vibrating their wings. The European honeybee (featured) has no such defense.

Ohhhh, nonononononooo…I am *SO* not watching that. I’d like to have a rerun of last night’s cool dream about the talking bobcat and not something else with these creatures as guest star!
