2009 Darwin Awards

The Darwin Awards for 2009 have been announced. These annual awards recognize "those who improve our gene pool... by removing themselves from it." All the awards are posthumous. The winners for 2009 are a pair of bank robbers in Belgium.
The city of Dinant is the backdrop for this rare Double Darwin Award. Two bankrobbers attempting to make a sizeable withdrawal from an ATM died when they overestimated the quantity of dynamite needed for the explosion. The blast demolished the building the bank was housed in. Nobody else was in the building at the time of the attack.

Among the runners-up is the first ever female Darwin award, given to a woman who drove her moped into flood waters, and then leapt back in after she was rescued to retrieve her bike! Link

I think that the fact that it took that long for a woman to even make 3rd place simply shows one thing. Males are not as smart as women and it shows that women are by far supeior to her male counterpart.

If males are not killing themselves, they are killing other males so I often wonder...why is the male population so high?

The terminology's gotten murky. In the books pretty much any story that ends in loss of reproductive abilities via applied stupidity gets labeled with "Darwin Award", whereas the website seems still to insist on the same story being only a "Darwin Award Nominee" unless it actually gets voted to receive that year's Darwin Award. So according to the books, many females have gotten the award before this; according to the website, none have -- not even the female to whom you refer.

I always found the Darwin award to be creepy. Sure it's interesting to read about stupid ways people kill themselves accidently, but you're still reading about someone dieing.

From the site- "For the first time ever, a woman--yes, a member of the safer sex--made it into the year's Top Darwin Awards Contenders!"

Not the first female ever, just the first to make it to the big-time.
