Zipper Coconuts

By John Farrier in Arts & Crafts on Nov 30, 2009 at 12:00 pm

It’s a simple and elegant concept: saw a coconut in two, then reattach the halves with a zipper. The result is an instant handbag. These are popular crafts for sale to tourists on Lamu Island off the coast of Kenya.

I feel vaguely ashamed that the author felt bad for having paid £2 for it. Did she/he really need the money that much more than the stallholder in a poor country? Particularly since they say how great it is that people are being entrepreneurs.

I HAVE ONE! My sister in law brought one for me from indonesia. So the kenyans aren't the only ones to see the bag-like qualities of coconuts.
