8 Most Beautiful Bridges in the World

By Queuebot in Blogs & Internet on Nov 30, 2009 at 11:14 pm

A bridge can be a way of getting from one place to another. A bridge can also be a work of art, a sight for sore eyes, and a way to enhance the beauty of its surroundings. These bridges are all of these things! Shown is the Tower Bridge over the River Thames in London.

Yes, very beautiful. But it is the photography more than the bridges that’s beautiful.

Tower Bridge is beautiful. I used to walk down to the thames and just look at it when I had nothing better to do, when I lived there

@Alex I just wanted to prove to you this month how much I’m dedicated to reading Neatorama. I have commented on every post for the last 30 days and my cerebal cortex almost exploded. I have been reading this blog for almost as long as you’ve had it up. Thanx for the crappy mystery gifts and the T-shirt. I’ll keep reading and you keep slinging.

I just went to the Tower Bridge yesterday!!! It IS beautiful! and the whole time we were looking at it we thought it was the London Bridge…haha
We were very underwhelmed by the London Bridge afterwards.

Tower Bridge is a bit of a sham, what you can see is almost entirely non-functional decorative stonework – the real work is done by the metal framework concealed within.
Being mechanically minded I prefer bridges where you can see the forces at work – suspension bridges, girder bridges, trusses, arches all elemental.

Well, I’d have gone with the Golden Gate, rather than the Bay Bridge, but that’s just me.
And Calatrava should’ve been in there somewhere. He built his career with bridges!

Any list of beautiful bridges is incomplete without the recently completed Millau Viaduct: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Technology/Pix/pictures/2007/08/09  /millau-ena-ap.jpg

I remember the queues before that was built. We got stuck for ages coming back past the Tarn – oooh, must be a dozen or more years ago. They were building it then – I remember the roadworks as well as the queues.

Oooh, Tower Bridge is lovely and I have a very similar photo I took myself, slightly different angle. What’s gorgeous about Tower Bridge is how the lights reflect of the water and illuminate the bridge. Lovely.

I don’t love the rest of the list. Millenium Bridge is much cooler than most of those. And what about Ponte Vecchio or Golden Gate?

Hmm, the picture of their 7th bridge (Richmond Bridge) is actually of a bridge in Heidelberg, Germany.

My personal favorite is the Kraemerbruecke in Erfurt, which has some beautiful, half-timbered houses built on top of it:
