Disney to Acquire Marvel Comics

Posted by Miss Cellania in Cartoon & Comic on August 31, 2009 at 10:23 am

The Walt Disney Company has agreed to buy Marvel Entertainment, which includes 5,000 comic book characters, including Spiderman, Captain America, the X-men, and the Fantastic Four.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on last week’s closing price of Disney, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own.Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the total transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

Get ready for plenty of speculation on what this will mean for the comics. Link -via Fark

This will probably mean we'll be seeing a lot more comic book to movie translations.

Wolverine will never be the same. It's a sad day (but finally I'll get the Spiderman/Hannah Montana cross-over I've been waiting for)

When Disney got the Star Wars franchise, it nearly killed Star Trek. I worry for DC now.

This can't be good. It'll be subtle at first. At least we'll have an excuse for an future bad movies.

Realistically, Marvel has made some bad choices in the past of their own. As for creative direction is up to who is working on the movie (and as long as the suits don't touch it), all this really involves is where the money is funneled afterwards.

I wonder if this joining of companies will provide the "Dr. Strange the Musical" I've wanted all my life. Staring Bruce Campbell as Dr. Strange of course!

Comics book nerds keep freaking out about the books, forgetting that Marvel Publishing only makes up about 17% of the company's profit. Disney didn't buy Marvel because they make comic books, Disney bought Marvel because they make comic book MOVIES.
