Female Merit Badges

Posted by Jill Harness in Arts & Crafts, Fashion, Funny, Pictures on January 31, 2009 at 5:27 pm

There’s something delightfully fun about these semi-retro and slightly-sexist female merit badges created by Artist Mary Yeager.

My female merit badges illustrate female “rites of passage” as well as the myriad physical manipulations women undergo to achieve cultural ideals of beauty, such as weight watching, whether or not to shave or wear makeup, etc. I’ve created tiny replicas of female products, such as a birth control pill pack and a pregnancy test. The miniature scale and meticulous, hand-embroidered surfaces convey my impressions of growing up female in our culture.

the ones circled in red are the combat ones right? I've always admired women proficient in killing with an egg beater.

These would look great on my kids' Girl Scout sashes! They don't take merit badges seriously anymore -too easy to earn, compared to when I was a Girl Scout.

Merit only has one r. Not two. Please spell check before posting.

Makes me think of all those Karate dojos where 12 years are given black belts. I mean, the parents are shelling out good money so their kid deserves it right?

    zav,

Seriously, will the internet become a better place once all spelling is corrected in it? You knew what she was talking about, move along.

Gaulder, paying attention to accuracy and details is important if you're going to be taken seriously. Not doing so is sloppy. Didn't your 5th grade school teacher tell you to read your work over before you hand it in? These days computers have spell checkers. It's not that hard. Pay attention to the details, proofread and spell check before posting. People will be reading what you write.

    slightly sexist?

i'm more than a faceless body concerned with domestic life.

"Sexist"? You might have missed the bit about these badges being feminist critique, not uncritical advocacy of dieting and domestic confinement. Yaeger's work has been featured in magazines like Ms., Bitch, and Lilith.

Are you sure about that, tammy?

"Pay attention to the details, proofread and spell check before posting. People will be reading what you write." Zav had posted.
After hitting the submit tab, they had noticed that they did indeed misspell Gauldar's name.

Do want! They'd look so awesome in my kitchen, and my man could instantly show his friends how adept I am at repairing pants and making delicious pie crust.
