Addictionary: A Website for Made Up Words

Posted by Alex in Blog & Internet, Book & Lit on November 26, 2008 at 3:49 am

Addictionary is a wonderful website for those who love weird, obscure, and well, made-up words. It’s kind of like Urban Dictionary, but less gritty and dirty feeling when you visit.

One of my favorite section is the There Oughta Be a Word, where you submit your own made-up words to describe a situation in the challenge.

    I just submitted “flatulence”

noun, A collective noun describing a group of politicians.

    Example usage:
“Legislation could not be passed because congress did not have a sufficient flatulence to make a quorum.”

Does anyone remember Rich Hall’s Sniglets? People have probably been making up words since they started speaking and told which words they could use, but this seems like some sort of violation of his legal rights. I guess you can’t copyright something like this though… Also, there is no mention of the word sniglet on their site which I suppose is fitting since they’re ripping off his concept.

@Crispin - that’s the first thing I thought of. Maybe one of us should put in a word.

Sniglitigation - When Rick Hall sues your ass for stealing his idea.

Oh my word! Just the other day I was wishing for a site like this. I want a word to describe what happens when you stare at or say a word out loud for so long that is fails to look or sound like that word any longer!

Yeah, these were a lot funnier back when they were called Sniglets. Oh wait, no they weren’t.

In high school, my friends and I had three Sniglets we were going to submit, but didn’t…

urinosecond - the moment it takes to begin peeing after getting into position

somniprints - the indentations and impressions left on one’s body after sleeping against a textured surface

Don’t forget Douglas Adams and John Lloyd’s The Meaning of Liff, which took town names and used them to mean stuff like this.
