Payment Spider Sold on eBay

By John Farrier in Art, Blogs & Internet, Money & Finance on Nov 21, 2008 at 9:16 pm

Previously on Neatorama, we’ve read the story of a man who tried to pay a bill with a doodle of a spider. Contributor Ali S. commented “I would buy that spider and the story if I could!” Well, Ali, you’re a little late. It was just sold on eBay for $10,000.

So it was worth a lot more than his bill. Those idiots over at the billing department must feel like fools now.

Yay, I got my mystery box today! It was an issue of Mental Floss magazine and a Mental Floss mini-book.

Thanks so much Neatorama – definitely worth the $$ and the (really short) wait!

Sorry if I’m pointing out the obvious :) Pretty funny to see it at $10,000 though…

Yeah, I say Ali S. ftw! It was a cute spider, but not *that* cute. o_O

The winning bidder probably will try to pay it with a drawing of a cat or something ;)

@shawnisboring – we’re busy sending out shipments! The first batch has gone out, more batches will go out this coming week!

@graffiksguru1 not surprised, but it would have been a great story if he got the money.

The guy behind the picture has a good attitude about it, though!!!

The man behind the drawing, David Thorne, said he was unfazed.

“The internet is a playground and I would not have it any other way,” Mr Thorne told ninemsn.

Aww, that’s a shame that the bidder won’t pay up! Oh well, glad the seller has a good attitude about it.

I think he should have to pay. Maybe he could offer a drawing of a monkey instead. This whole affair is pretty silly, and has probably garnered way more attention than it deserves.

Darn it! I missed the bid by just a few minutes! Argh! ;)

That non-paying winning bidder should go to jail! :)

He should at least wonder about the fees involved.

I think the non paying bidder should have drawn 2 spiders sent it in as payment!

I’m confused the article said the winning bidder bid 15,000 and the e-bay listing said winning bid 10,000 what am I missing?

    ^^ i’d say 5,000 dollars.

seriously, paying a bill with a drawing of a spider. At no time did that guy think it would actually work. Selling said drawing on Ebay and the winning bidder saying it was a joke is Golden… keep it up internet.

Very funny, guy called Raymond Delauney has done funnier stuff in the Raymond Delauney Emails – examples here. You have to read the DNA email – friggin hilarious.

The spider is amazing and I could laugh at that article all day. It is also the inspiration behind:

If only we could get out of paying bills with humor :)
