1001 Rules For My Unborn Son

Posted by Alex in Blog & Internet on November 20, 2008 at 1:24 am

1001 rules for my unborn son is a fantastic tumblr blog where you will find hundreds (so far) of words of wisdom about life. For example:

270. Stand up to bullies. You’ll only have to do it once.
269. If you’ve made your point, stop talking.
268. Watch your language at the ballgame.

Sometimes, you find a gem like this one:

Always keep a recent photograph of yourself on file in case of emergencies or unexpected notoriety.

"270. Stand up to bullies. You’ll only have to do it once."

Yeah, right. My son nearly hospitalised a bully recently, but it hasn't stopped.

    You'll be dead.

Is it me, or do these rules seem really old-fashioned and patriarchal? It's fitting that the music and the pictures posted on the blog are mostly from decades gone past, because a lot of these suggestions belong there as well.

I loved it. I read them all - very wise and well laid out. I wonder who is behind this - I'm willing to bet they do something important or influential.

I really liked it... kind of reminded me of "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff".

Dull as dishwater, and kinda old-fashioned.

What about the rules for your unborn daughter, or can she just do as she pleases?

1002 - Remember your father is an overbearing rulemaker who wants to control your life.

Most of these rules are pretty good, but it does leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. It's like whoever is writing these wants to completely control his sons life in minute detail.

    185. Be careful not to ogle girls at the beach. That's what sunglasses are for.

That rule was definitely written for me. xD

Well, except for the proposition at the end of the sentence. Yuck.

    Preposition*

Some of them are cute and I look forward to teaching them to my future children... but some seem super old fashion and don't fit with the times as of now. Now i'm thinking of rules for my unborn daughter to educate her in the years to come...

    My Favs:
    259. If it looks like rain, carry an umbrella. She'll thank you.

    257. If you offer to help, don't quit until the job is done.

But some of these have a very deep meaning, but appear to be nothing major:
    213. Go barefoot. It toughens the feet.

    Corinne,
As a grammar freak myself, I will tell you that it is perfectly acceptable to put a preposition at the end of a sentence. And it is fine if the beginning of a sentence is where a conjunction is at.

Even better to put a proposition at the end of one.

    275. Don't be a snob.
    274. Don't settle for a store-bought cake. Bake!

So glad other people are questioning the bully thing. I stood up to a bully and took a beatdown.

Some are old fashioned and outdated but I beleive the haters are missing the spirit of the message.

I love old-fashioned advice. It reminds me that not everyone in the world is rude these days.

The only one I truly take exception to is #14: Men with facial hair have something to hide. One of his rules should be to grow a beard. Every man should, at least once.

Some are old-fashioned, I agree, but the overall ideas are pretty solid these days. What I really loved about this link was the other link it led me to, the awesome Square America Snapshots (http://www.squareamerica.com). Always loved seeing other people's pics and these are fantastic! So, thanks again to the fab Neatorama for giving me two great links in one post!
