Mr. Green Genes

Last year we told you about cats that glow red. Mr. Green Genes is a cat in New Orleans that glows green! In normal light, he appears to be a regular orange tomcat, but he exudes a green flourescent glow under ultraviolet light.

The six-month-old cat was created by scientists who are trying to combat a range of diseases such as cystic fibrosis.

They modified his DNA to see if a gene could be introduced harmlessly into an animal’s genetic sequence.

To track where the gene went, they decided to use one that glowed under ultraviolet light.

The particular gene in question, known as green fluorescence protein, is likely to express itself in mucous membranes – hence his freakish mouth and ears.

You just know they had that “Mr. Green Genes” name picked out WAY in advance. A lot of self-kneeslapping over that one, I’m sure.

The naming only gets better if he glows blue. Scientists would love to have a cat named Mr. Blue Genes.
