Cold War Ads

By Miss Cellania in Advertising on Oct 5, 2008 at 8:29 am

In the 1950s and 60s, Americans were taught to fear communism to the point of paranoia. Advertising was quick to take advantage of that fear. See a collection of such ads at Socyberty. Link -Thanks, RJ Evans!

There was good reason to fear Communism, though sometimes the results looked silly. Communism killed over 100 million people last century, before it collapsed.

Communism didn't collapse, though. It still survives in Cuba and China, for example.

    Love the poster.

Did people actually think that not having proper bathroom amenities would make employees storm out, shouting, "Down with two-ply! I'm becoming a communist!"?

Yep, nothing like taking advantage of fear. Quite profitable I hear. Of course, to fear it in America (not Russia) at the time was indeed more paranoia than reality.

Americans will believe anything that is on TV or on the News especially back then. Propaganda is a great way to sway the American people.
