Cell Phone Towers in Disguise

Posted by Miss Cellania in Architecture on September 16, 2008 at 7:39 am

A transmitter tower is not, in itself, pretty. So phone companies put cell transmitters in existing structures, in natural heights such as trees, or build towers that look like something else. Weird News Files has a roundup of some places you never suspected a cell phone transmitter to be, such as this church tower. Link -Thanks, Drew Waters!

    This is amazing! Who knew that Bank of America branches are actually cellular transmitters?

    I don’t think it’s done because they are ugly. I would rather think it’s a matter of security - they attract less attention this way.

    Genious! No one will pay attention to a church.

    I’m tickled by the ones in petrol station price displays - in the UK we’re often told not to use mobiles on forecourts but Shell rent out space in their price boards for cellphone base stations.

    Cool.
    They’ll have new locations available with Merryl Lynch.

    I can`t help but think that someone has just taken pictures of tall objects and imagined that they`re towers. Very neat concept though and my fav would have to be the cactus and the rock.

    @Skipweasel,

    It’s actually ingenious to put a transmitter there. If you’re too close to a tower (say, right below one), oftentimes you won’t get a signal. By putting one there, they’re discouraging people from using their cells near the gas pumps. :)

    The cathedral for the Episcopal Diocese of Ft. Worth, TX, (St. Vincent’s Cathedral) recently added a bell tower which also houses a transmitter.
