Postal Worker Suspended for ... Wearing the Wrong Shorts!

UK postman Adam Williamson got suspended from his job at the Royal Mail and was even escorted home by the police because he showed up at work wearing non-regulation shorts:

When postman Adam Williamson found he could no longer squeeze into his standard issue Royal Mail trousers, he turned up at work in shorts.

But the solution didn’t go down well with bosses, who suspended him and had him escorted from the sorting depot by police.

Mr Williamson says he has fallen foul of rules because the navy blue shorts have a Nike logo. But he claims they are virtually identical to ill-fitting ones supplied by his employers and he has used them on rounds during the summer for several years.

Depot chiefs are refusing to back down until he finds a non-branded pair of shorts that fit, however.

    I can understand it being a violation of uniform, but why can't he get rid of the logo? Colour it in with marker of tear it off with a seamripper? So long as it looks clean cut, why not?

    Good lord, those knees ought to be covered.

    So when you get a little too big for your britches, instead of dieting, blame the shorts?
    This guy could get together with the 400-lb prisoner dude.

    If there is a regulation uniform just provide him with one that fits properly.

    How do you get to fat for your pants when your job is to walk around all day?

    Seriously? Suspended and escorted out by the police? Someone's supervisor needs to get a stick out of their butt and let the dude go get some new shorts. Or give him some new standard issue sorts.
    People make a big deal over the dumbest things.

    Ted, are you looking at the same picture as me? This guy doesn't need to be dieting as far as I can tell. While rules are rules, I think the management could and should have handled things differently such as telling him to not wear those shorts next time he comes into work.

    Heh, this reminds me of a time in high school (in Florida!), where I was "busted" because the shorts I was wearing ended about a centimeter above my knees ... I missed an entire afternoon's worth of classes as I sat in the dean's office because of it, so I can certainly sympathize with this guy - sometimes rules enforcement -can- get so stringent as to loose sight of what's actually -important- ...

    Justin, I did more than just look at the picture. I actually read some of the words, too:

    I have always envied USPS and UPS people being able to wear shorts, while I am on the verge of heat exhaustion on a torrid NYC day.

    Am I the only one in favor here of the Post Office? He wasn't adhering to strict uniform rules. Living in Britain myself, posties have to all wear the same uniform at set times, so shorts at set times during the summer, even if it is freezing, etc. They are representing the organisation, and each postie does his part. Who cares if they were "similar", they are still not regulation. As stupid and arbitary they may seem, the rules are the rules, and although the police escort seemed a bit heavy handed, discipline was the right way to go.
