Banned Xbox360 Ad: Spontaneous Game of Shoot 'Em Up (Bang!)

In 2005, Microsoft made a "Jump In" ad for their Xbox 360 console that never aired. The ad, deemed too controversial, showed commuters on a subway platform playing "shoot 'em up" with their fingers (Bang!).

Like many viral things, the ad has recently gone 'round the web again, so here it is for all of you who haven't seen it: Hit play or go to Link [YouTube]

And if you like that, check out the casting call for the banned Xbox 360 shoot out ad (which is actually better than the actual ad!):

Okay, for those of you who think this is a horrible thing that encourages kids to go shoot people.
This commercial has a joking attitude. Nobody was actually serious (as shown by the person in the car) about it. They were using their fingers guys, come on now.

Also, I play first person shooter games all the time. I would honestly be afraid to pick up any actual gun. They're just not my thing, I don't like them.

Really, the people that play first person shooters and actually think about doing violent things that are sometimes shown in those games are messed up in the head.

This idea that nobody in America watches anything from outside the States is a myth. People in the entertainment industry are cultural omnivores precisely because they are constantly on the look-out for new ideas to bite. Ad agencies are not exactly known for their firm moral grounding and I for one would not put this past them.

I don't think it was a Spaced rip-off either. If anything, it's a rip-off of the Syphon Filter PS1 ad that was banned way back when. (I wish I could find it on YouTube...)

Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe I dread the day that my son will demand an xbox 360 (or 720 or 2015 or whatever the hell they'll be calling it by then) but I found that to be fairly horrifying. let's glorify mass killing of people in public, good plan.
