  They irony is that a site that’s supposed to predict the future closed down due to something they couldn’t “foresee”

  I don’t know anything about this magazine, or whether it’s actually real, but modern astrology is primarily about understanding the human psyche with it’s different aspects and changing dynamics, not ‘fortune telling’.
  Still, I guess astrology is always good for a cheap shot to make folks who cling to a materialist philosophy feel superior.
  So, ha ha! Great gag!

  The supposed irony is lost unless you subscribe to the santa claus explanation of what it means to be psychic. I’ve known people who could be /called/ psychic (mostly precognitive dreams) but I’ve yet to meet a someone who has a link to instantly knowing everything without fail and the only people who appear to claim as such are T.V whores worse than the greediest tele-evangelical programs.

  It’s not a psychic magazine: it’s an astrology magazine. That it doesn’t taste like a granny smith isn’t a bad thing, if it’s an orange in the first place.

  Astrology historically (and yes, even today in most countries) is largely a predictive enterprise. Fortunes were spent on astrologers not because they could tell the king what the king was like, but because it was believed they could tell the king what the future was like.

  But, ancient or modern, astrologists were and remain a touchy, defensive bunch.

  BTW, some people may suggest that anyone who uses the phrase “cling to a materialist philosophy” to describe someone who looks at the evidence of a claim before basing their beliefs on it do so just to make themselves feel superior.

  How funny. Yes, if you were to look around and find the real astrology instead of reading the paper you might understand. However, people are quick to turn it off.

  Astrology was used to determine the best time to start something. Like what is the best time to attack a neighbor. Only Buddhists claim that they can predict peoples birthday and death day. But they don’t claim to predict the future with Astrology.

  Isn’t that the way? You’re told something all your life, only to find out on Neatorama that it’s really not the case.

  Astrology is a very old superstition based on the movements of the stars in the sky. Certain constellations were thought to preside over different times of the year. Its popularity today remains because of its idea that you can predict the outcomes of certain events or actions based on a person’s birthdate or the particular time of year. It’s also used to make sweeping generalizations about people’s characters and psychological attributes. Finally, people use astrology for matchmaking and compatibility, because the stars know best.

  I remember a hindu wedding that was delayed for hours until the stars lined up just right.

  To me, that’s as superstitious as the horoscope in the daily paper - probably more so, because a lot of people don’t really take the paper horoscope that seriously.

  And the best time to attack a neighbour is when his back is turned - duh.

  What’s not to like about astrology & horoscopes? There are 12 signs, so divide the population of the world (~6 billion) and so 500 million people are going to have pretty much the same day as you.

  And don’t forget the shattering accuracy of prognosticators in general; that full-on warning of 9-11 that allowed us to avoid so much trouble and save so many lives. Sarcasm aside, surely if any fortune telling worked, that day would have stood out to someone?

  Besides, aren’t the charts used by astrologers thousands of years old? Haven’t the positions of the stars changed in relation to us? Even if it did work for the Sumerians (or whoever) would it still work for us? And what is the purported mechanism for the influence that heavenly bodies have on us. Apart from Keira Knightley of course. The influence of her heavenly body is plain for all to see.
