Python Mistook Golf Balls for Chicken Eggs

Posted by Alex in Animal on January 2, 2008 at 3:06 pm

An Australian couple put some golf balls in their chicken coop to encourage their hen to lay eggs (who knew this would work!?) but discovered that a python had eaten them by mistake!

The magnanimous couple took the snake to a nearby animal sanctuary, where a vet performed surgery to remove the balls and saved the python. Link

It's long been pretty common to put phony eggs in with hens to encourage them to start laying. This trick is an old one, and it's easy to find at antique sales such wooden "eggs" that are well over 100 years old. I didn't know it would work with golf balls, too, but chickens are't known for their intellect.

So they spared the python, who will no doubt be back for more eggs eventually.
