The Seven Don’ts of Shanghai

Posted by Alex in Pictures, Travel & Places on November 29, 2007 at 2:49 am

We just found out that the Mafia has its own Ten Commandments, so it’s no surprise that the people of Shanghai also have their own list of "Seven Don’ts"

For those who’re too lazy to look ‘em up:
expectoration: spit
attaint: disgrace, bring dishonor upon, condemn.
virescence: state or process of becoming green. I assume they mean greenery here.

Regarding “G” - hey, they are breaking their own rule! “Word” is a 4-letter word!

Wrong, Capella. They’re not “saying” anything in that sign. All those four-letter words are printed.

Noticing the pattern in horrible translations to English…. Do the people doing the translations look up the most obscure and inappropriate ’synonym’ to use? I mean, come on! ‘Attaint’ ?!

    How obfuscatory!

Are those words with 4 Chinese letters or 4 letters in another language?

and BTW, I like randoming through the street.

By not saying or reading 4 letter words, I can random around and chuck junk and hack trees all I want. Well, I’m following Capella’s logic.
