Here’s a fantastic photoessay from Time Magazine, titled The World’s Wackiest Holiday, featuring such gems as Scotland’s Up Helly-Aa Viking festival (above), Summer Redneck Games, Spain’s Tomatina tomato fight, Japan’s Naked Festival, Thailand’s Monkey Buffet, and many more!

I’m surprised the Montreal ‘Just For Laughs’ festival wasn’t mentioned. -That’s- a wacky festival.

I wouldn’t call Up Helly Aa a whacky festival.

The Islands sit slap bang in the middle of the north sea, right between Scotland ad Norway.

And used to belong to Norway, so a ceremonial Viking Funeral and fire throwing seem frankly a bit tame when they could have gone for sacrifice and doing the blood eagle on their enemies.

The actual link calls them “holidays”. Which they’re not. And I don’t think some of them are all that “wacky”. The people who have been celebrating them for hundreds of years probably don’t think so, either.
