Jellyfish Lake.

By Anita in Video Clips on May 20, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Jellyfish Lake, on the island nation of Palau, was once connected to the ocean through an underwater tunnel. At some point the tunnel closed off, trapping jellyfish in the saltwater lake. With no natural predators, the jellyfish population exploded, leaving a breathtaking (if a bit scary) underwater ecology.

BTW – unlike other jellyfish swarms, apparently these don’t sting. I’d still be scared to death to swim with them though!

All they’d need to control the population is a good source of peanut butter and bread.

I’ve been in that lake! It’s pretty surreal in there, to say the least.

You know when you are about to watch this video you should first let it all load up…and put on Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” then sit back and watch them jellies float about.

    Very soothing.

It seems that they can sting, but their tentacles are too short to have any effect on swimmers they come in contact with.
