This ad in a 1932 Popular Science sells an attachment that will convert a car’s exhaust into a vacuum cleaner. Probably seems like a good idea at the time! Link – via Scribal Terror

works even better with a K-27 Turbocharger attached to a fart can...

This basically works the same as a spray paint gun, blow air through a tube, make a hole in the tube, connect a hose and anything on the other side of the hose that is light enough will get sucked in if the airflow through the tube is high enough.
So yeah, it could work, but it would be kind of a waste of fuel..

Never thought it'll be possible until now. But it looks like a waste of fuel, i'll stick to my vacuum cleaner. And let my pacesetter exhaust do its real job.

Hey, back then this was a really innovative idea. Just like the cigar lighter plug in car vacs were such a hit a couple decades ago. I think fuel back then was like 3 cents a litre and no one was too concerned.
