Giant Squid Captured: Calamari Rings the Size of Tractor Tires.

By Alex in Animals & Pets on Feb 22, 2007 at 3:46 pm

New Zealand fishermen caught what appears to be the world’s largest giant squid:

Local news said the Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni was about 10m (33ft) long, and was the first adult colossal squid landed intact.

One expert said calamari rings made from it would be like tractor tyres.

The following may not be factually correct. However, I read this story elsewhere and it appears that what was caught was a “giant squid” (in the colloquial) but not a Giant Squid (scientific).

What was caught in New Zealand was a Colossal Squid and these are not related to the more mythical/enigmatic Giant Squid.

There are two separate Wiki articles for each.

I’m looking at that photo, and I don’t see anything tractor-tire-sized.

Calamari shrinks a LOT when cooked. There’s nothing remotely big enough on that sucker that would be tractor tire sized once cooked.

Anyway, that being said, it is a pretty darn huge example.
