Chicken with Duck Feet.

Posted by Alex in Animal on February 1, 2007 at 1:14 am

A chicken in Colombia was born with feet of a duck!

The odd-looking bird isn’t the result of a duck sneaking into the hen house. Veterinary experts said it’s impossible for the two species to breed.

Instead, experts said the bird is simply a genetic mutation.

Genetic mutation... they jump to conclusion.

It has been demonstrated that it’s impossible for the two species to breed but it may be possible to find specimens that are compatible with other species. It's extremely rare but that is one of the possible cause of evolution.

Iterspecies breeding. Speaking of Daniel Radcliffe...

    Actually that is called atavism.

Wikipedia: "the unexpected appearance of primitive traits; or a reversion to or reappearance of a trait that had been present in a lineage in the past, but which had been absent in intervening generations."

Some gene that has been dormant for millions of years is activated on a individual due to a mutation in another gene.

Hmm... So chickens have evolved from a waterbird.

I imagine it's just like when humans are occasionally born with webbing between their fingers, not common but it does happen.

    Ah. Dicken!

That reminds me of the old ad for "Dicken's Cider".

They had to change the name to "Dicken's Apple Cider" for some reason. :)

It's evolving in response to global warming.
