By Alex in What Is It on Jan 25, 2007 at 1:24 am

This week’s What is It? game, brought to you by the fantastic What is It? blog is … a hammer – but what kind of hammer? (i.e. what is it used for? It has a specific function). Can you guess what it is?

No prize this week, so you’re playing for bragging rights. For more guessing fun, check out What is It? blog …

Update 1/26/07 – The answer is: “Drill sharpening hammer, for reshaping points on the large star drills used for making blasting holes in mines, it’s held against the bit and struck with a sledge hammer.” Congrats to Chris Worsley (#12)!

Hmmm… I’m going to guess that it would be used by a blacksmith for some sort of shaping task (and would probably have a corresponding die to go with it. I’m just not sure what the resulting pieces might be used for…

My first thought was that it’s a nutcracker, the kind for people who don’t have the hand strength to crush acorns in those plier models (like me.)

This is not technically a hammer, but is struck by a hammer (sledge). It is used to reshape, while hot, the working end of a drill rod used in the ground and stone, etc.
Some have a pin in the center to line up on the airhole in drill rods that are used in rock and have an airhole running their length.

I’m going to guess that its a ‘bush hammer’. Bush hammers are used in masonry to texturize stone and concrete.

It’s a logging maul and was used by lumberjacks to mark the cut ends of logs before they were sent downriver. Different logging companies had different marks, like “brands”…mauls were more effective than hot brands for marking the logs because a log “rustler” could just saw the branded end off the log. A heavy swing of the maul on the end of the log would drive the points into the wood about a half inch, but the impact would mark the wood grain several inches into the wood, like a sound wave. Then even if the end were sawn off, a light scorching of the wood would reveal the owner’s mark…like invisible ink!

It’s some sort of hammer to find out if the mine is a dud or not.

I’ll second answer #12, Chris Worsley.
I have one, with the pin in the center and have been guessing about it fot years. It does fit an old drill bit I have. I did use it to make some interesting copper conchos against a urethane block
