A Restaurant Where One Eats in Total Darkness

Posted by Spluch in Food & Drinks on January 8, 2007 at 8:09 am

Dark RestaurantThe first dark restaurant in Asia is officially opened on the 23 December 2006. This restaurant, located in Beijing, China, has its interior painted completely black. Customers are greeted by a brightly lit entrance hall and will be escorted by waiters wearing night vision goggles into the pitch dark dining room to help them find their seats. Flashlights, mobile phones and even luminous watches are prohibited while in this area.

The meal will be taken in this environment with the complete loss of vision. By starving one’s sense, your other senses are stimulated to full alert – all so the theory goes – and your food will taste like it’s never tasted before. In case you are wondering about the washrooms, they are all brightly lit. Link [in Chinese]

Similar restaurants can also be found in Melbourne, Montreal, Zurich, Paris, Berlin & London. It can also be found in various cities in the United States and Russia.

In Switzerland though, the idea is different. The restaurant was created by blind people, to show the seeing what being blind is like. And the waiters don't wear night vision goggles - they're just blind :-P

I wonder if they thought to power off those night vision goggles before the photo flash went off.

Why does the wait staff wear ties if nobody can see them?

Why don't they just blindfold the diners? Seems it would be a lot less trouble.

Hey, at least they don't have to worry about a high electricity bill...

I'm not convinced by the idea that the other senses are heightened when one can't see. One would rely on the other sense more, certainly, but the notion that blind people's hearing is better than seeing people's (for example) is a fallacy, constructed to make seeing people not feel so bad for the blind.

the restraunt in zurich is called blindekuh and theres another located somewhere in europe but i forgot. the staff is consisted of only blind and visually impaired and the restraunt was created to open opportunities for those who can't find jobs otherwise. it was a great experience and it helped me realize the tough situations the blind were faced in everyday tasks such as eating. definitely someplace to check out if you're in or near that area.

great food too..i wonder if the chef was blind too..

As in Switzerland, Montreal's O.Noir restaurant was created to help employ blind people and help raise awareness about the blind.

This is a interesting, but slightly weird, concept that has come to the Western World, from yes, you guessed it, China. For some reason, the Chinese and Japanese are always at the forefront of being very, oh so, different compared to the rest of the world. But hey, at least they’re trying new things…

http://www.unsicht-bar-berlin.de/ is one of the restaurants in berlin (has been here for quite a while as well). However, i agree with "good for not-so-hot dates" :D

i hate the fact that they only serve multi-course menus though..

The Melbourne restaurant closed a couple of months back. Give a year or two for the cycle to start again.
