The Geostationary Banana Over Texas project calls itself “an art intervention” and is scheduled for launch in August of 2008. The 300 meter banana will be constructed of bamboo and paper and filled with helium. It will float at 30 to 50 km above the state of Texas, which will put it on the line between Earth’s atmosphere and space. From the ground, the banana will be visible and recognizable day and night all over Texas. Will this project ever get off the ground, or will there be slip-ups? Link

Glad I don't live in texas. I would be pissed. You can clutter up the landscape to force me to look at billboards, you can cluttter up the internet, tv, and newspaper to force me to look at ads. BUT DONT CLUTTER MY SKY. Its the last place we're free to look and dream. I don't want to look at a banana, when I look up.

    I can see it now:

Enjoying a romantic evening under the stars the couple gazed outwards to the moon....and to the giant floating banana.
"isn't it a beautiful night, Susan?" asked Joe.
"The giant banana looks just lovely, Joe. You can almost smell it." murmered Susan.

If this works, how many companies will start using this approach for advertisements? We'll have a sky full of blow-up pizzas, floating video screens, soda cans, and 800 ft tall busty mud splattered cheerleaders (or whatever other gimmick the beer manufacturers devise).

You've got it backwards. You should be angry that your world is already cluttered with ads. Advertising is graffiti. Giant floating bananas are art.

Shawn Bell--I also live in Texas, and I find the idea abhorrent. I didn't move out to the country just to spend the rest of my days staring at a ludicrous piece of skyborn oversize produce. This ain't art, it's just dumb.

They can put that stupid thing in the airspace over their OWN damn country, thanks.

The whole banana thing is stupid, its some crack -headed artist who is trying to make a statement but he just ends up making all of us canadians look like retards. It will be even worse if it crashes because then we will look like incompetent retards.
