As an addition to the post about impressionists copying from photos: here’s a reverse effort by a Russian photographer, Ekaterina Rozdestvenskaya, to stage scenes from paintings as photographs. The site is in Russian, but it’s pretty understandable what is what (the links to images are on the right).

The female model in all of these photos is a legendary Russian actress Lyudmila Gurchenko. She’s 70, but because she’s very slender, she can pull off very young looks with sufficient makeup.

The image above is, of course, Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring [wiki].

fabulous! I would like to note however, that while most of the pics are of that gorgeous 70 year old, the one that you choose to display, is not.

And here I was all set to move to Russia, if people look like that at age 70.

I actually dressed up as 'the girl with the pearl earring' for halloween last year! I got some pretty good photos, wish I could post them!

In Los Angeles, artist Nancy Webber has been doing similar work. Her versions tend to be more relational to the original subject than attempts at total reproduction, however.
