Weta’s Ray Gun.

By Alex in Pictures, Toys on Aug 25, 2006 at 10:18 pm

Check out these cool ray guns, made by Weta Workshop designer Greg Broadmore: Link – via Boing Boing and Thanks Jim Perry!

By the way, Weta Workshop [wiki] in New Zealand makes props for movies and TV, and came to prominence with their productions of costumes, armors, weapons, creatures, and miniatures for The Lord of the Rings. The company’s name is thought to be from a pre-historic looking New Zealand insect [wiki] that looks like a cross between a cockroach and a cricket with very large legs!

Whatdaya mean, “thought to be”? Everybody here in New Zealand knows what a weta is. We see them every so often in our gardens. And yes, they’re big, at least compared to grasshoppers and crickets. See http://weta.boarsnest.net/

If you read that again, you see that the ‘thought to be’ refers to whether or not Weta Workshop/Digital’s name is related to the insect.
Just look at the logos for the anwser.

As for the rayguns, I can’t help but wonder if Peter Jackson is taking Halo in a whole new direction. ;)
