The Giant Camera behind the Cliff House in San Francisco, a landmark building, is a camera obscura [wiki] shaped like a giant camera!

Sadly, it’s never been open the many times over the years that I’ve visited the Cliff House.

Years ago, I went when it was open, and it was amazing. There’s a slowly rotating periscope on top of the building which projects an image onto a large concave parabolic screen that’s mounted like a tabletop in the middle of the room. It was a beautiful, bright, sunny day outside, and I felt as if I were peering into a bowl of light as the camera scanned the cliffs, beach and ocean outside.

Re-open the Giant Camera, please! Maybe this is a local treasure that needs a dedicated volunteer. Any takers?

I’ve been in that place, back when I was about 10 years old. Inside had many wall pieces that featured optical illusions, halograms, but yes.. the main attraction was the periscope with its view projected onto a table. At an angle, it even appeared to bubble. Admission was only $0.25, but people were encouraged to donate more to help keep it open. Lots of fun after a good meal at Cliff House. Pity it’s not still open.
