Wartsila-Sulzer: World's Largest Diesel Engine.

By Alex in Car & Vehicle, Pictures on Aug 11, 2006 at 1:01 am

Check out this ginormous engine, built by Aioi Works of Japan’s Diesel United, Ltd. for a container ship.

If you think your SUV is a gas guzzler, this engine burns 1,600 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour at its most efficient power setting!

Is that engine that big or is it just tiny little Japanese guys? :)

Those aren't Japanese, and I believe the PC term is Oompa-Loompas.

Please, please stop saying "ginormous". It really sucks.

I like the ladders they have so you can descend into the crankcase--kinda cute, or at least cute by the standards of diesels that weigh more than some houses.

Actually, this engine, at its most efficient power setting, surpasses 50% in thermal efficiency, making it one of the most efficient diesels too! No fuel guzzler at all!
