As tributes go, this just seems apalling. You are supposed to honor someone’s life, not the manner of death.
I don’t get the impression that the crash victim is really being “honoured”. The person just seems secondary to the story – probably apocryphal.
I thought “crash” was pretty much the term everywhere.
