MAR-TI-NI - Let's Drink To The Droids!

MAR-TI-NI by Skullpy

The smuggler and the bounty hunter found themselves surrounded by a bunch of jabbering Jawas fully armed and in full force. The tiny wall of well armed guards parted to let the Jawa-in-charge through, who was carrying a case full of clanking contents. As the little boss opened the box the smuggler and the bounty hunter began to recoil, ready to go to war if need be, but what they saw next instantly put them both at ease. For the little boss held a bottle of booze in one hand and a long, skinny glass in the other, and in a croaking voice he said "Mar-ti-ni?"

How To Politely End A Conversation At A Party

(Image Link)

Sometimes it’s hard to politely remove yourself from a conversation at a party, and the last thing you want to do is make things awkward since you’re going to be stuck in a social situation with the person for a while.

So how do you move on without coming off like a total jerk? Chris Colin, author of What To Talk About: On A Plane, at a Cocktail Party, in a Tiny Elevator with Your Boss’s Boss shares his bold but effective approach to finishing a conversation at a party:

"Whether you’re having a lovely conversation or a crappy one, I think that the way to get out of either is identical," he says. "My approach is to look them in the eye with a big smile and say, 'It’s been so nice talking with you.' And then you just do a hard pivot and you walk away."

...

If you are hereby emboldened to try Colin's approach, note that the technique needs to be deployed with appropriate warmth and congeniality.

"What has to go with it is being a nice and decent person," says Colin. "When you say ‘It’s been nice talking to you,’ you should probably mean it, and you should communicate that with your eyes and your smile and all that stuff. If you do that, then I think it’s okay."

It’s just nice enough to keep you in a stranger’s good graces and assertive enough that it’ll even work on the Clingers and the Close Talkers.

Sitting Inside A Giant Water Balloon When It Explodes

The Slow Mo Guys are nothing if not adventurous, and their quest to entertain us with silly videos often leaves them all wet.

But now Dan Gruchy and Gavin Free are exploring a whole new level of stunt strangeness by making Dan crawl inside a giant balloon, which is then filled with water until it explodes.

(YouTube Link)

The Slow Mo Guys filled another 6 foot long balloon with water a while back and jumped on it until it burst, but that video lacks the cringeworthiness this stupid stunt has in spades. And seeing Dan sitting there with his head sticking out of a giant watery balloon sac is utterly hilarious!

Flower Skull - Grow Or Die

Flower Skull by AntoFax

We all begin life as a seed, we return to the earth when we die, we each have our own distinctive smell, and some people have very pretty faces. In these ways we are a lot like flowers, and life is essentially the same whether you're a plant or a person, we're all just trying to stay fed, be desired and grow. But is our desirability diminished by the thorns we grow to keep the world at bay?

The Arcade Superstars Of Saturday Supercade

(Image Link)

From 1983 to 1985 America's video game obsessed youth had a good reason to stay home on Saturday mornings- the Saturday Supercade, an animated series on CBS that featured many of our favorite video game characters.

The legends of the arcade and console were brought to life in colorful 2D animation segments, and when the Supercade hit the airwaves we realized the story behind our favorite arcade games didn't stop at the kill screen.

(YouTube Link)

Characters like Donkey Kong and Frogger seemed fairly slim on storyline in the games, but when they appeared in their own 11-minute long animated episodes kids couldn't wait to watch...and play all the games afterwards!

Frogger-

(Image Link 1/2)

Leaping in-between cars across a busy intersection was just the beginning for young Frogger, an intrepid reporter for the Swamp Gazette.

Frogger had a crime solving mystery kids vibe and a much deeper storyline than you'd expect given the simplicty of the game, and yet young Frogger still found time to play in traffic in almost every episode.

Watch a clip of the show here

Donkey Kong-

(Image Link 1/2)

Back before he went exploring the world with his son Diddy, the giant gorilla named Donkey had his own segment on the Supercade, featuring comedian Soupy Sales as the voice of Donkey Kong.

Donkey has escaped from the zoo, and it's up to Zookeeper Mario and his gal pal Pauline to bring him back, except criminals keep getting in their way!

Donkey always helps put the criminals behind bars, proving he's a good gorilla, but he can't resist kidnapping Pauline every chance he gets either!

Calvin fought long and hard for his right to play the role of the Doctor during playtime, but Hobbes wasn't going to take Calvin's hogging of the time lord role lying down. A Power Packed Collection Of Animated Comic Book Covers

Comic book covers are drawn to invoke a feeling from the reader, convincing them to buy the book with a promise of over-the-top superheroic action or out-of-this-world artwork.

The more action packed the series the more likely it is to have a splashy, action packed cover, giving the reader a taste of what’s to come when they peel back the cover and dive in.

Many comic book covers feature the finest quality comic art, sometimes even better than the art in the book itself, so how do you make that dynamic cover art even better? By animating it, of course!

The Staff at ComicsAlliance have put together an eye popping collection of the 25 Greatest Animated Comic Book Covers, see if you can browse through them all without being hypnotized by the heroism.

How Female Video Game Characters Would Look With Realistic Body Shapes

No matter where you stand on the topic of sexism in pop culture one thing is for certain- the female body is most often portrayed in an idealized form in visual media such as comic books and video games.

Sometimes this idealized form ties in well with the character, like when the character is an athlete in peak physical shape, but a lot of times they’re just drawn that way because creators think it will help them sell their product.

It’s not meant to be a slight against “average” women, and yet it’s hard to deny the impact these unrealistic body shapes have on young women.

Which is why treatment oriented website Bulimia.com created their own versions of female video game characters with what they describe as “average American body shapes”.

I agree with some of the makeovers but I don't think they put enough thought into the characters they chose for the project, because why would a Special Forces officer/pit fighter who trains constantly be overweight?

Terrifyingly Realistic Fallen Angel Sculpture

Presupposing angels are real, and not just mythical beings, I wonder what an angel would look like if it fell to earth?

Would it look like a human with wings, as they are most often depicted, or would it resemble something far more disturbing and alien? Whoa, what if angels are actually aliens?

Allow your eyeballs to consider this hyperrealistic sculpture by Beijing based artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu as you mull over that canonical conundrum, and you’ll soon find yourself faced with another dilemma- do you find this sculptural figure attractive or repulsive?

Confused Deer Screams At Laughing Humans

This facial expression and emission of sound from our mouths (and sometimes nasal cavities) we call laughing makes perfect sense to humans, heck it can even be contagious, but laughing is lost on most animals.

(YouTube Link)

Some animals see the baring of teeth as an act of aggression so laughing really gets their goat, but one poor, confused little deer in Nara, Japan sees laughing as a terrifying assault on her senses.

This video proves two things- deer oriented horror movies would star laughing humans as the monsters, and deers prefer dramas to comedies.

22 Clever Tool Hacks

Tools are created with specific jobs in mind, which is why you wouldn’t try to saw a brick in half with a drill or hammer a screw into place, but when you think outside the toolbox you find many more ways to put those tools to work.

Looking to shorten a bolt and leave a clean edge?:

“If you need to shorten a bolt, let your drill do the hard work. Spin two nuts onto the bolt, tightening them against each other. Then chuck the bolt into the drill and hold a hacksaw blade against the spinning bolt. The nuts help to steady the blade and clean off burrs when you unscrew them.”

Need to cut a length of PVC pipe which is already mounted? Use a string to slice that pipe while it stays in place. Does driving hooks into wood hurt your hands? Drive 'em in with a wrench, and save your mitts for a future career in hand modeling!

These super handy tips and many more can be found in The Family Handyman article 22 Clever New Uses For Your Tools, which both amateur and veteran builders are sure to find informative.

Fantastic Facts About The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal is, without a doubt, one of the best puppet movies ever made, and even though CGI has taken over people are still blown away by the practical effects created for this film.

It’s one of those iconic films that can never be effectively remade or rebooted, and yet this film almost didn't make it to the big screen due to poor feedback from preview audiences. Jim Henson spent $15 million dollars making sure the film got the chance it deserved in theaters, and The Dark Crystal turned around and made a whopping $40 million at the box office.

A lowly sum by today's movie standards, but enough to keep The Jim Henson Company in the filmmaking business.

(YouTube Link)

Filming The Dark Crystal wasn't just a costly venture, it was also an incredibly difficult film to create, with some of the epic puppet stars like the Skeksis requiring six puppeteers to operate.
