Beautiful Yet Impractical Illustrated Cookbook By Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol’s 1959 cookbook called Wild Raspberries is less of an instructional manual for beginning cooks, and more of an art book. The book showcases fanciful representations of different delicacies, each illustrated in a beautiful yet exaggerated manner. Wild Raspberries is definitely meant as an art book only because instead of precise instructions in making food, the book offers crass directions. An example of this is the book directing its readers to ‘send the Cadillac round to Trader Vic’s tiki bar for a suckling pig of sufficient size for a party of 15.’

What’s Spacetime?

When you look at the sky during the night, how do you tell the exact location of the different celestial objects that you see? Similarly, how do scientists determine where the planets are located? A concept called spacetime was implemented by experts.

Spacetime is a way to describe an object’s location at a specific point in time. Combine the three-dimensional space with time and you have a total of four coordinates. Physicist Mike Evans further explains (and lowkey complains about it) here!

Where Does Dust Come From?

Dust is annoying. It’s everywhere, and no matter how many times you keep cleaning, it will always come back! So instead of just mindlessly cleaning up after this unwelcome visitor, maybe it’s time to understand what dust is and its origins. Macquarie University in Australia launched the DustSafe program to learn more by analyzing different dust samples sent by people from all around Australia. According to the program’s analysis, house dust can include elements like trace metals, radioactive elements, antibiotic-resistant genes, and microplastics. In addition, they estimated that one-third of trace element contaminants in household dust originate from sources inside the home.

A New Way To Recycle Plastics More Efficiently!

Engineers have developed a new approach to plastic recycling. The new method was presented in a study as a proof-of-concept. The approach is inspired by how nature naturally ‘recycles’ organic polymers into different proteins. These building blocks within organic polymers are broken down into parts and reassembled. Following this thought, researchers established the “nature-inspired circular-economy recycling", or NaCRe.

Through NaCRe, the scientists involved in the study were able to turn the proteins from silk into green fluorescent protein, which is a glowing tracer used in biomedical research. Learn more about this new method of recycling here!

What’s The Best Method For Removing Coffee Stains On Mugs?

Personally, as a coffee lover, coffee stains on mugs are not really a big problem that I have. Maybe it’s because I use instant coffee, or because I’m blind and I haven’t noticed the stains yet. Either way, if coffee stains in mugs are a big problem for you, The Kitchn’s Ever Meister might be of help!

Meister tested five different methods for clearing said stains in order to find out the most effective way. Check the results of her experiment here!

The Secret To Skyrim’s Decade-Long Longevity

If you’re not familiar with the Bethesda classic, Skyrim is an action role-playing video game popular for its opening cutscene and the infamous bugs that leave people laughing and finding more ways to break the game. When Skyrim was released in 2011, it managed to sell ten million copies. Within five years the game sold 30 million copies! A decade after its release, Skyrim still lives on in every major modern console, from PC to Nintendo Switch and even VR.

The impact and relevance of the game leave us to ask the question: how did Skyrim manage to last this long? Wired’s Andrew Kersley lists different reasons that made the Bethesda game relevant, and so popular that it's getting a seventh re-release. From accessibility to giving players a lot of choices during playtime and to a world that enchants players to play and explore, Kersley details them all. Check the full piece here

Mystery Worm Infection Shows That A New Species Can Live In Humans

This is quite scary. Scientists have discovered an unknown species of the Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) in a Vietnamese man. The infection happened last year when a 23-year-old man visited a hospital with abscesses on his limbs and neck. Doctors pulled out five adult worms, each around 1 to 2 feet long, from the man’s wounds, as well as larvae.

Doctors and experts initially thought that the man had contracted Guinea worm disease, a sickness that health workers have worked hard to eradicate for decades. The doctors behind the mysterious case published their report in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. After confirming with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they have concluded that the man did not get Guinea worm disease. The doctors concluded that the man’s worms bore a closer physical resemblance to reptile-loving worms. The identity of the worms that got into the man’s system remains a mystery.

The Many Colors Of The Moon

Photographer Marcella Giulia Pace compiled her Full Moon shots taken over the past ten years. Surprisingly, Pace was able to capture the Moon in 48 different hues! According to the photographer, the reason behind the different shades is the atmosphere. The color change is dependent on different things. “The atmosphere gives different colors to our satellite (scattering) based on its height with respect to the horizon, based on the presence of humidity or suspended dust,” Pace adds.

Graffiti Artists Turn Chicago Skyway’s Viaducts Into Works Of Art

A group of graffiti artists banded together to turn Chicago Skyway’s Southern viaducts into wonderful artworks. The dirty, rusted support columns that feature pockmarked walls and glass-strewn sidewalks are now colorful walls filled with different graffiti art.

The Meeting of Styles, a traveling, international gathering of graffiti artists along with other artists from Colorado, Texas, and California took up the challenge of painting different murals in Chicago Skyway. Even though the artists involved in the project produced various art pieces, a similar style has emerged from the multiple works. According to Krase, one of the painters, “it’s just a matter of coincidence. We didn’t plan that. It’s just our own styles happen to be cohesive.”

These Lenses Are Made From Carbon Dioxide

A pair of limited-edition sunglasses is now for sale for a whopping $495. What’s special about this eyewear? Well, clothing brand and material science company Pangaia created a pair of sunglasses that is made from carbon dioxide.

With the help of Twelve, a startup that turns greenhouse gas emissions into the chemical building blocks for new materials, Pangaia used their technology to create polycarbonate lenses. The company used Twelve’s “CO2Made” chemicals instead of fossil fuels. The sunglasses are luxurious, elegant, and lightweight. These design choices were implemented to show how valuable and transformative the eyewear is.

Beethoven’s 10th Symphony, Now Complete

A team of music historians, musicologists, composers, and computer scientists worked together to finish Beethoven’s unfinished 10th symphony. The said symphony has been puzzled over by Beethoven fans and musicologists.

When Ludwig von Beethoven died in 1827, he only left some musical sketches of the unfinished piece. He was unable to finish the work due to deteriorating health. The team used artificial intelligence to teach a machine both Beethoven’s entire body of work and his creative process in order to reconstruct and finish the musician’s 10th symphony.

To learn more about the process of reconstructing and finishing Beethoven’s unfinished musical piece, check the full piece here.

Bear Turns On Lost GoPro

Smart bear! A hilarious video of a bear who turned on a lost GoPro was discovered by a hiker in Wyoming. Once the hiker was able to scan the device’s SD card, he was treated to unique footage.

The majority of the video is just the bear trying to eat the GoPro, with the animal trying to gnaw on the device for a little while. The footage is both cute and funny at the same time. It’s surprising that the abandoned GoPro not only survived the snow, but also the bear who was looking for its next snack. Check the footage above to see more of the bear’s shenanigans with technology!
