Video Game Characters in the Real World

It's simple but, cute. Aled Lewis placed classic video game characters in appropriate landscapes. Here's Street Fighter's Edmond Honda applying the Hundred Hand Slap.

Finally! Canned Whisky

People look at you funny if you raise a whole bottle of whisky to your lips. That's why this canned whisky is a more discreet and thus superior option:

A Panama-based company believes outdoor drinkers would prefer to crack open a tin rather than lug round a bottle of their favourite tipple.

Now bosses at Scottish Spirits – which retains an office in Glasgow – is testing out the novelty on its Caribbean and South American markets.[...]

Scottish Spirits launched the tins last week, the first time straight whisky has been sold in a can.

Chief executive Manish Panshal said: ‘We are really thrilled with the idea – it’s going to be a part of every lifestyle and occasion.

Book Origami

El Paso-based artist Isaac Salazar folds and cuts the pages of books to create word and images. Here's the story of how he started in the craft, as told by his wife Veronica:

In 2000, we went house hunting and saw a model home that displayed some book art. They were very simple, kind of like the Readers Digest Christmas Trees, but a bit different. We loved them... so i immediately went home to make our own for the guest bedroom. We have since moved and I needed some new art for our guest bedroom when my husband asked if we can fold "WELCOME" into the book. I thought it was too complicated and told him ~ "I don't know, why don't you try"... and viola... he creates the masterpieces and I list & manage our Etsy shop.

Thanks to great in advances in clock technology, I present to you a clock that speeds up 20% every day at 11:00 and slows down 20% every day at 11:48, giving you an extra twelve minutes of lunch to enjoy. Twelve minutes may not seem like a lot but, to put it into perspective, this is a full additional hour of lunchtime gained every week.

Barbie the Sociopath

Mariel Clayton photographs dioramas of Barbie dolls in grisly scenes that juxtapose the glamor of Barbie with the savagery of her hidden violence. It's like all this time she's always been a female version of Dexter Morgan.

Financial Advice from a Man Who's Been Retired Since 1969

Leonard McCracken worked for a steel company until he retired in 1969. He's now 107 and has been living on savings, Social Security, and an annuity payment ever since. Bankrate.com's Jennie L. Phipps asked McCracken to share his wisdom about managing personal finances that permitted him to remain retired for 41 years. Among his suggestions was to always get a job, even if it's for much lower pay than you're used to:

McCracken was unemployed about 45 years ago after his previous employer went bankrupt. He had to take a job driving a truck that paid $5 per day. It was a low point in his life, but between that and a commission sales job that he took at night, he and his family muddled through until he got back on his feet.

Cigarette Ash Landscape

From a distance, Yang Yongliang's sculpture looks like a large, upside down cigarette. But a close inspection shows that the ashen tip depicts a city. As you can see in the other photos at the link, below the cigarette is a pile of ash in a field of wildflowers.

Boston Debuts Ambulance for Obese Patients

Boston's emergency medical services department unveiled a new ambulance designed to help transport obese patients without injuring EMTs:

Boston emergency services debuted a specialized ambulance designed to carry obese patients on Tuesday, and the retrofitted vehicle was promptly needed on two calls, authorities said.

The ambulance is equipped with a special stretcher that can hold 850 pounds and a hydraulic lift with a 1,000 pound capacity, said Captain Jose Archila of Boston's Emergency Medical Services fleet.

The ambulance is likely to be needed two to four times a week, he said.

"We have seen a huge increase in the last six months," said Archila about the number of calls by obese patients.[...]

Back injuries among crews are common due to strain from lifting extremely heavy patients, he said. The ambulance makes the patients more comfortable as well.

In appearance, the ambulance looks like any other. The hydraulic lift is folded and stowed underneath the bed, and a gas tank was repositioned to accommodate it, Archila said.
