WWI-Era Dazzle Camouflage Could Protect Modern Military Vehicles

During World War I, the navies of the world experimented with dazzle camouflage. The odd angular shapes and lines, such as those seen on the British minelayer pictured above, broke up the visual patterns of the vessels, making them harder to see at a distance. Now researchers at the University of Bristol (UK) think that it could still be useful for land vehicles on modern battlefields:

High-contrast dazzle camouflage could throw off an attacker’s perception of a target’s speed by a wide enough margin to cause a miss, the researchers said. “In a typical situation involving an (rocket-propelled grenade) attack on a Land Rover, the reduction in perceived speed would be sufficient to make the grenade miss where it was aimed by about a meter (3.3 feet), which could be the difference between survival or otherwise for the occupants of the vehicle,” said Nick Scott-Samuel of the University of Bristol.

They arrived at this conclusion by examining the ability of people to perceive the speeds of objects covered variously by dazzle and conventional camouflage patterns. Participants experienced a 7% greater difficulty gauging the speed of the dazzle-covered objects -- which could be enough to save the lives of a significant number of soldiers. http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2011-06/wwii-era-dazzle-camouflage-could-protect-modern-military-vehicles-even-better-old-ones | Photo: Wikimedia Commons Previously: Camouflage to Disrupt Facial Recognition Programs

The Indie design hub ModCloth offers these fake eyelashes that are made to look like the plumage of a peacock. They're quite striking! Alex is currently fluttering his own pair here at the office, and they look simply gorgeous. Link -via The Presurfer | Photo: ModCloth

Dr. Seuss' Short-Lived Newspaper Comic Strip

In 1935, Theodore Geisel composed a syndicated weekly newspaper strip called Hejji. It told the adventures of Hejji and the Mighty One as they travel through the mysterious land of Baako. The strip was not a commercial success and was cancelled. But you can read several installments of it at the link. Link -via The Mary Sue

Joystick Attachments for Smartphones

A company called Ten 1 has developed a gadget that can slip over smartphones and serve as joysticks for easier movement while playing video games. So far, they're available for iPhones, iPod Touches, and Androids. The company says that it's done extensive testing and the joysticks do no damage to the mobile devices.

Homeowners Foreclose on Bank

Warren and Maureen Nyerges of Collier County, Florida, didn't owe a single cent on their house, but that didn't stop Bank of America from trying to foreclose on it. The Nyerges fought it in court, and won. The court ordered Bank of America to pay court costs and attorneys' fees, which they didn't. So the Nyerges foreclosed on the bank:

Sheriff's deputies, movers, and the Nyergers' attorney went to the bank and foreclosed on it. The attorney gave instructions to to remove desks, computers, copiers, filing cabinets and any cash in the teller's drawers.

After about an hour of being locked out of the bank, the bank manager handed the attorney a check for the legal fees.

Steampunk Ash

Hail to the king, baby! Clifton created and wore this costume of Army of Darkness's Ash Williams to DragonCon:

Being relatively new to cosplay and having almost no experience with sewing, I knew that the most difficult aspect of creating my steampunk costume would not be its design, but its construction. Fortunately, my girlfriend taught me the basics of using a sewing machine and reading patterns, and with her help, I created the vest and ascot, and modified the pants and shirt. I was also fairly inexperienced with prop making, but with a lot of time, effort, and only minor injuries, I was able to create the props the way I envisioned them. The base of the chainsaw is an actual Homerunner XL chainsaw (as used in the movie) that I purchased from eBay. I gutted the casing, took apart the engine, and then heavily modified the shell and blade with actual copper tubing, spare parts from a bike shop, and a variety of parts I found while thrifting.

Quick, R2, to the Droid Poles!

Suddenly, my respect for C3P0 has greatly increased. Well, I guess his normal manner is the perfect cover for his secret identity as the Coppered Crusader.

New Words Added to the Oxford English Dictionary

What new words have been officially* added to the English language? Oxford University Press now lists them on its website. Now, whenever you write "meep" or "nekkid", you can feel confident that you're using real words and spelling them correctly. Insist that your English professor change the grade on your term paper.

Liquid Bricks Turn a Road's Surface Bouncy

(Video Link)

It looks like the surface of a road has suddenly turned aqueous! This is actually an art installation by Benjamin Boré in Bourges, France. Although there's not much information, an introductory video shows several people ripping up a section of brick road and putting a water mattress under the surface. That's why it's so bouncy.

Yes, sadly, this is a real book. I guess we should all be glad that it's been discounted heavily. The Amazon reviews are harsh, which we fellas should take as encouraging.

Cassette Tape Doilies

Jennifer Cantwell found that cassette tape can be successfully crocheted, and so turned Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band into a doily. What album do you think would make good doily fodder?

I Find This Gathering of Penguins Somewhat Ominous

Officially, the 200,000 penguins are on the Salisbury Plain of South Georgia Island to mate. But still, that's a lot of penguins. If they were ever to make a power grab, this would be the time.

Motorized LEGO Sandcrawler

(Video Link)

Marshal Banana's 10,000-piece LEGO Jawa sandcrawler is an extraordinary work in the medium. It's executed in great detail, inside and out. And it even works at collecting droids! He adds this interesting bit of Star Wars trivia: only one side of the Sandcrawler featured in Episode IV was painted, so he got creative with the other.
