J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion as an Illuminated Manuscript

Benjamin Harff, a German art student, spent a year creating a copy of The Silmarillion in the tradition of medieval European illuminated manuscripts. Most of the text itself is typed, but the elaborate calligraphy is Harff's own work. Click on the link to see some amazing works of calligraphy.

Harold Pinter's Duck Hunt

(Video Link)

Oh, sure, the Nintendo classic Duck Hunt was a fine game. But what's not widely known is that it was based on a one-act play by Harold Pinter. Thankfully, Piper McKenzie Productions has revived this and other stage presentations of Donkey Kong, Pitfall and Pac-Man.

In the above recording of Duck Hunt, two hunters plan to enjoy a day of duck hunting in the woods. But dark, unspoken secrets between them begin to surface.

Darth Vapour, Dark Lord of the Steam

You cannot resist the power of the Steamy Side. This steampunk mask made by Michael Salerno "represents the Imperial aspirations of the European powers in the 19th Century."

Prints from Pasts That Never Were

In his Alternate Histories prints series, Etsy seller Matthew Buchholz imagines small, subtle changes in American history as reflected in iconic prints. Here, for example, is a picture of the massive statue Emperor Krgyyx Threatening the World. Of course, if you live in New York City, you can just look at the real thing, although the visitors' center is currently closed for renovations. Link -via The Breda Fallacy

Filmmaker Sent Rejection Notice from Film Festival She Never Even Submitted Work to

It's hard to work in the creative industries. You've got to have a thick skin because you're going to get told 'no', a lot. You may even get rejected for things you've never asked, as Shawnee Barton discovered. Art San Diego rejected her non-existent submission to a film festival. Here's a passage from her response:

After all this, I (half-jokingly) wonder if Art San Diego is an organization made up of art supporters or artist soul crushers. I whole-heartedly wish the fair success and look forward to seeing the work you did not reject. That being said, I do not need your flogging.

Underwater Boxing

(Video Link)

Sure, it's a challenge, but it's not underwater chess boxing. Now that would be a sight to see.

This video shows a boxing match that allegedly took place in 1939 at Wembley Empire Pool in London. As YouTube user diagonaluk writes, "Can't imagine why this never caught on." Me neither. -via Doobybrain

Nintendo Boardwalk Cabinets

Donald Kennedy imagined Nintendo characters in three old-fashioned boardwalk cabinets. Wario tells your fortune, Mario challenges you to grab a prize, and Elec Man (from Mega Man) shocks you with electricity. They light up and move, too.

Animated Sheet Music

(Video Link)

This is a simple but remarkably soothing video. Dan Cohen took the sheet music for Miles Davis's "So What" and animated it, one note at a time.

Trojan Deer

Kristie Carlisle Duncan, a MFA student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, came up with this whimsical sculpture. It's a mechanical deer piloted by tiny chickens. Not real ones, of course. But if this contraption rolls up to your front door, don't let it inside. Link -via @Christopher Jobson

Pileus Iridescent Cloud

Esther Havens snapped this marvelous shot in Ethiopia. NASA says that it's a pileus iridescent cloud, which is "a group of water droplets that have a uniformly similar size and so together diffract different colors of sunlight by different amounts." Translation: the sky gods are happy and demand fewer virgin sacrifices this year.

Nyan Cat Theme on an Ocarina

(Video Link)

YouTube user docjazz4 plays the ocarina well enough to keep up with the rapid tempo of Nyan Cat -- but only for a minute and a half. Keep at it! We need to hear at least three hours of this music without interruption. -via Geekosystem

Sand Art Created Right before Your Eyes

Ako Tsubaki, a Japanese artist, works with sand. In this amazing video, he arranges sand in layers so that the cross section reveals a landscape. -via reddit | Artist's Website

Elegant Paper Peacock

Believe it or not, this peacock sculpture is actually made out of paper! The Great Omar, named after the cover image on a book of Persian poems, was created by Joyanne Horscroft and Julie Wilkinson.

Humans and Habitats

I've been saying this for years: we're all just characters in a really boring role-playing game played by transcendent, unseen beings. Or that our lives, somehow, are interesting to them. Kris Straub sums up this reality nicely in this strip. Link -via Ace of Spades HQ

8-Bit Zardoz

(Video Link)

Zardoz, that bizzare 1974 John Boorman film starring Sean Connery, might make a good video game. Animator Nick Criscuolo created this introduction for this tragically non-existent game. -via Boing Boing | Criscuolo's Website
