Homeowner Flies over Own House, Notices Thieves Breaking in

(Video Link)

David Hudson of Jonesboro, Arkansas, took his friend Steve Lynn for a ride in his airplane. Lynn wanted to see what his house looked like from the sky, so Hudson flew there. While looking down, they noticed that people were loading items from Lynn's home into a truck. They had spotted a burglary in progress.

Hudson and Lynn immediately contacted the police. The burglars tried to get away, so from the air, Hudson and Lynn gave the police turn by turn directions that led them directly to the suspects.

Official Regulations for Hunting Yetis

What are the rules for hunting the Abominable Snowman? The government of Nepal was very clear about what people on mountain climbing expeditions should do if they encounter a Yeti. In 1959, Ernest H. Fisk, counselor of the US embassy in Kathmandu, summarized the rules for American travelers in Nepal. You can read the full memo at the US National Archives.

Pixar Film from 1972

(Video Link)

Ed Catmull and Fred Parke made this film demonstrating early computer generated animation way back in 1972. It shows an animated hand derived from a physical model and then digitized, as well as facial movements based on mathematical formulas. Catmull went on to start Pixar, so in a sense this is the first Pixar film, and quite possibly the first computer animated 3D film.

Psychologist: Leaders Are Four Times as Likely as the Average Person to Be Psychopaths

A study by psychologist Paul Babiak indicates that one in twenty-five leaders could be a psychopath. This affliction could actually be an advantage in a workplace:

The survey suggests psychopaths are actually poor managerial performers but are adept at climbing the corporate ladder because they can cover up their weaknesses by subtly charming superiors and subordinates.

This makes it almost impossible to distinguish between a genuinely talented team leader and a psychopath, Babiak said. Hare told Horizon: "The higher the psychopathy, the better they looked – lots of charisma and they talk a good line.

Raincoat Turns Rain into Drinking Water

Hyeona Yang and Joshua Noble, two students at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, built the "Raincatch." It's a suit that collects rainwater and filters it into drinking water.

If Joshua Noble's name seems familiar to you, it may be because he's one of the people responsible for the playable receipt printer.

Lakeside Home

This lovely sculpture is itself impressive, but what I found most noteworthy was that this mysterious photo was placed on reddit, and the hive mind of that community went to work tracking down information about it. One redditor even found a Google Street View image to confirm the location. This little house was built at a remote lake in the Altai Republic, Russia by a group of green living enthusiasts.

Google's Trend Search by Drawing Feature

Google has a neat feature that I'd never heard of before today. You can draw a distribution curve and Google will find the search term frequency that most closely resembles it. Mine ended up being "2008 sports cars."

LED Mohawk Viking Helmet

Thanks to some eccentrics, the fedora is making a comeback. I guess it's that whole Don Draper chic thing. But it strikes me as inappropriate headgear for the workplace, or public places in general. This helmet made by Garrett Mace offers a classier, yet subtle statement to people that you meet.

If you think the above photo of the helmet is impressive, then just wait until you see the video at the link. The LED fibers can light up in complex, variable patterns and colors. It's a really amazing piece of fashion design.

Scratch & Sniff Business Suit

(Video Link)

According to Marc Abrahams, the founder of the Ig Nobel Prize and the Annals of Improbable Research, some Korean businessmen own special suits that emit a pleasant aroma when rubbed. These suits allow the owners to remain fresh after very long days at work and play. Here's Abrahams demonstrating the effectiveness of his peppermint-scented suit to a test subject.

Outboard Boat Motor Margarita Mixer

Sadly, the original outboard motor isn't inside the case. Etsy seller windchimesandmore replaced it with a small 2-cycle engine. Still, it blends vigorously and would make a fine conversation piece at parties.

Cordless Candlestick Phone

I would love to have this in my home! Adam Ben-Dror took a classic candlestick-style phone and made it cordless. It's completely functional, thanks to parts that he acquired from a company that specializes in restoring old phones and converting them into modern ones.

RC Plane with Pilot POV Camera

(Video Link)

YouTube user vrflyer installed a tiny, fake instrument display in a model F-16. He placed a doll inside, but replaced the head with a camera. The camera moved to track the movements of vrflyer's own head. So as the plane flew, he saw a simulation of what a F-16 pilot would see.

Real Life Like Button

Does your ego need a cheap boost? Make one of these portable and wear it around your neck!

My prediction: the future of augmented reality includes upvote and downvote buttons for individual people. In the meantime, we'll have to be satisfied with this interactive object built by Mario Klingemann and displayed at the UAMO festival in Munich.

Shopdropped Fake Magazines

The artists/pranksters at TrustoCorp made three fake tabloid magazine covers and left them in store magazine racks throughout New York City. If not for the graphics, would you even know the difference?

Battlestar Galactica Wedding Photo

During their wedding reception, Justin and Heather Hartley arranged guests in the poses of a Battlestar Galatica promotional picture. The BSG photo was in imitation of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. That's kind of a dark tone for a wedding, but let's work with it.
