Star Wars Paper Snowflakes

Because he's a good dad, Anthony Herrera wants to raise his kids with proper Jedi values. If necessary, he'll arm Disney Princesses with lightsabers and photoshop Ewoks into family vacation photos. More recently, he's created nine downloadable paper snowflake patterns featuring characters from Star Wars.

Birth of a Superhero

A friend of redditor ninjao won a mustache competition boldly known as The International Man of Movember. Here's a rear view. What do you think are his superpowers?

Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy on a Glass Harp

(Video Link)

I've long found the Sugar Plum Fairy to be among the most enchanting parts of The Nutcracker. Here's a performance by Anna and Arkadiusz Szafraniec, a duo that plays a glass harp so large that it covers five octaves.

25-Cheese Pizza

Why make one? As President Kennedy said of a somewhat similar ambition, we Americans do great things like this "not because they are easy, but because they are hard." Nick of Dude Foods -- the man behind the chocolate covered deep fried triple double Oreos -- added nineteen cheeses to a Domino's Wisconsin 6-Cheese Pizza. View his list of cheeses and more photos at the link.

Two men want to paint, but have different objectives. One is a graffiti artist; the other paints over graffiti. Who will prevail when both have paint powers beyond human understanding? Check out the excellent visual effects in this short film from Corridor Digital.

Origami Nazgûl

In The Lord of the Rings, the Nazgûl were among the most dangerous foes our heroes encountered. Jason Ku, a mechanical engineering student at MIT, rendered a frighteningly realistic one in paper. He's been active in the craft since the age of five and has clearly mastered it.

Rash of Tuba Thefts in Los Angeles

Twelve tubas have been stolen from Los Angeles area schools in the past few weeks. In some of the robberies, thieves took only tubas. Why?

The thefts, band leaders say, are probably attributable to Southern California’s banda music craze and to the high prices the brass instruments fetch on the black market.

A new tuba can cost upwards of $5,000, while a used instrument can cost $2,000.

In the comments, suggest more absurd reasons why criminals would want to steal a large number of tubas.

Two Lost Doctor Who Episodes Recovered

Whovians, your Christmas special has come early this year! An episode from 1965 and another from 1967, both thought lost to the wibbly-wobbly ravages of time, have been found. 106 remain unaccounted for, mostly because the BBC often reused videotape in those days. The hunt continues for the rest.

Scooter Camper

Jay Nelson makes wonderfully whimsical campers using tiny foundations. My favorite is this Honda Spree that's ready for a beach vacation. Others featured at Dornob include an impossibly tiny houseboat and a motorhome that's only eight feet long.

Escalator Imitates Star Wars Text Crawl

An escalator in Tel Aviv bears the opening text crawl of Episode IV of Star Wars. Many people are wondering why, but I regard it as self-evidently good. Watch a video of it in motion at Geekologie.

Knitted Napier's Bones

Because they are awesome, Pat Ashforth, Steve Plummer and Ben Ashforth illustrate math through their crafting projects. Pictured above is their knitted version of Napier's Bones, a calculation device invented by Scottish mathematician John Napier (1550-1617). George Hart explains how they work:

The image below shows how to arrange the bones if you wanted to multiply by 76495. For example, the bottom row, labeled 9 at left, allows you to read off 9 x 76495. The rightmost digit of the answer is the 5 seen in the triangle at right. Then read off the remaining digits by adding the two numbers in each parallelogram, carrying as necessary, e.g., 1+4 gives 5 as the next digit and 6+8=14 gives 4 as the following digit, with a carry of 1 into the digit after that. The result can be quickly read off as 688455.

Skinhead Decides to Attack Black Man Wearing a "Spokane Boxing Club Champion" T-Shirt

It would prove to be an unwise decision. The encounter began when the suspect informed the boxer that gentlemen of his race were not welcome in a particular bar:

Kootenai County Sheriff's Department officials said at the time of Abbey's arrest that he threatened to stab Baker.

Baker, of Spokane Valley, left the bar to avoid a fight, but Abbey followed him outside and toward a marina, hurling racial slurs.

According to a sheriff's department report, "Baker stated Abbey told him 'blacks' were not welcome in Bayview and he had better leave before something happened."

Abbey then poked Baker in the chest, the report said.

Baker told sheriff's investigators that he felt threatened as Abbey followed him, wouldn't leave him alone, and he instinctively punched Abbey in self-defense.

"Baker stated Abbey immediately fell to the ground and did not get up," the report said.

George Takei Calls upon Star Wars and Star Trek Fans to Unite in a Grand Alliance against Twilight

(Video Link)

Which would prevail in a battle between a Constitution-class heavy cruiser and a Star Destroyer? There is a time and a place for such conflicts, and Star Trek and Star Wars fans have shed much blood in them. But George Takei reminds us that there is a threat against both franchises -- nay, civilization itself. That is Twilight, and now it is time for fans to unite against it.

As a Trekkie, I take up Captain Sulu's call and extend a hand of friendship to my geeky brethren across the divide. Our differences are not so great.

Giant Twisted iPhone

The Soviet architect Vladimir Tatlin wanted to build a massive spiral tower reaching four hundred meters into the sky. Tatlin's Tower, as the idea was known, was designed to honor the Third International, a communist organization. The tower was never built, but artists Alexei Shulgin and Aristarkh Chernyshev have created this smaller replica that looks like an iPhone. Appropriately, it's called 3G International:

Tatlin's work is considered one of the avant-garde icons, whereas iPhone is a bright techno-consumerist icon of today. Back in the 20's of the last centuries avant-garde artists have invented design as a way to bring art into people's homes. During the 20's century designers were gradually taking artistic ideas and implementing them into product design. Today we see companies claiming their products are art objects themselves; art has to re-define its role in the society again. The Monument to 3G links together the beginning and the current state of nearly a century of art-to-design dialogue and follows the strategy of re-claiming the designers' ideas back into art.
