Per Capita Distribution of Heavy Metal Bands Worldwide

Greedy Scandinavians are hogging most of the world's metal bands to themselves. How should we resolve this gross injustice?

Fake Science Fair Project: Teddy Bear Birth Defects

What happens when Pure Evil contaminates the drinking water of pregnant teddy bears? Dr. Allison Lonsdale of the Institute for Dangerous Research decided to find out. These were her procedures:

1. A sample of Pure Evil was obtained from the ruins o f an exploded toaster in the south of England.
2. Pure Evil was administered, via drinking water, to pregnant laboratory teddy bears for the duration of their pregnancy (4 months).
3. Dosage varied from 0 parts per million (ppm) to 1000ppm, titrating upwards by steps of 100pm.
4. Offspring were euthanized and mounted for display.

As you can see from the picture above, Pure Evil has serious teratogenic effects on teddy bears.

Deviled Egg Chicks

Susan of Savoring Time in the Kitchen made these adorable deviled eggs that look like chicks wearing spectacles. The feet and noses are made from carrots and the eyes from olives and pimentos. She says that they're ideal to prepare for children and grandchildren, but I want to eat them!

Allegedly, this video shows Johanna Quaas performing a gymnastics routine in Cottbus, Germany. When eighty-six years old you reach, look as good, you will not.

She can also work the parallel bars.

Getting into a Different Frame of Mind

(Video Link)

Frame of Mind is a short, clever music video by Ben Boutwell and Steven Allen. The pair play around with a magic picture frame that warps reality -- presumably the work of special effects. The music is "Kick Drum Heart" by The Avett Brothers.

Electronic Abacus

The sorocal is a retro-cool Japanese marvel of current and ancient technology: a calculator combined with an abacus. Sharp made four models in the seventies and eighties, including the one that you see above. Math students used the manual system to verify the results of the electronic system.

Facebook Plug-in Lets You Name Personal Enemies

I've been saying this for years now: a major flaw in Facebook's interface is that it lets you create a friends list, but not an enemies list. Now a plug-in designed by Dean Terry of the University of Texas at Dallas gives users that option:

Last month he and a student released a Facebook plug-in called EnemyGraph, which users can install free and name their enemies, which then show up in their profiles. "We're using 'enemy' in the same loose way that Facebook uses 'friends,'" Mr. Terry explained. "It really just means something you have an issue with." [...]

Who was Mr. Terry so eager to diss? "One of the first things I put was the band Journey," he said of his enemy list, "just because they annoy me, and I thought it was funny." He has also enemied Deepak Chopra and the color red.

Carved Bowling Balls

Your professor has given a heavy reading assignment: a famous architectural manual carved into a bowling ball. Eddy Sykes made this and similar sculptures in reflection of his blue collar upbringing as well as his architectural training.

Edible Cookbook

It's a cookbook! It's a cookbook! The German design firm Korefe put together a package of lasagna ingredients, complete with instructions. Those instructions are embossed on pages of pasta. View photos of the uncooked cookbook at the link.

A Fantasy Bed & Breakfast

There's a marvelous bed and breakfast outside of Durby, Belgium called La Balade de Gnomes. It looks like it's straight out of a fantasy movie. Outwardly, the building is a wooden bull. Inside, you can find an eccentric mixture of stucco and carved driftwood in the Gnome Revival style.

The Fruit of the Beetle Tree

Somewhere in Texas, there's a tree that grows the most marvelous fruit: classic Volkswagen Beetles. It grows only one a year, but it's worth the wait.

Hey, don't act like that's a weird thing to say. After all, ratchet screwdrivers grow on trees.

Robotic Water Gun Shoots Squirrels off Birdfeeder

(Video Link)

Kurt Grandis was plagued by an endless offensive of squirrels against his birdfeeder. He needed a solution, so he programmed sensors to detect the shape and color of squirrels -- and only squirrels -- then instruct a Super Soaker water gun to shoot them. Skip to 16:00 to see it in action.

A Cute Customer Loyalty Card

I want to go to London if for no other reason than to get one of these cards stamped over and over again at Tapped & Packed. Especially since no one is steering the bike.

Star Wars Continuous Line Drawings

For a school project, Sam Hallows made several Star Wars-themed drawings, each of which consists of a single, unbroken line. You can find his C-3PO, R2-D2, AT-AT and Millennium Falcon drawings at the link. He hopes to soon market these images on postcards.
