Peace at Last

It was 25 years ago that Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Predator met and fought in the jungle. Since that time, the fires of hatred that burned between them subsided. They recently met at the Stan Winston School of Character Arts and made peace. Good for them. It will make their upcoming shooting of Kindergarten Cop II so much easier.

James Bond Shot at 4,662 Times During His Career

What are the odds that 007 would survive? Gordon Stanger noted each time that someone took a shot at Bond and crunched the numbers. In New Scientist, he writes:

There is some ambiguity over how many gunshots have been fired at James Bond because, in many gunfights, it is not clear who the shots are aimed at. However, by my reckoning, in the 22 Bond films to date, there have been at least 4662 shots fired at our hero. A static well-aimed shot would almost certainly have proved lethal, but assuming all 4662 were "on the run", the probability of a single fatal shot is about 5 per cent. That is, the chance of a single shot missing is 0.95, and hence the probability of all shots missing is 0.954662 or 1.4 × 10-104, which is as close to zero as makes no difference.

The Periodic Ceiling of Elements

High school chemistry teacher Scott Byrum found a brilliant way to catch the attention of his students. When it was time to renovate his classroom, he made vinyl letters and numbers and attached them to the tiles of his drop ceiling. When arranged properly, they formed the periodic table of elements. It got just the effect that Byrum was looking for:

“My students love it,” Byrum says of his new ceiling. “It makes them feel more connected to my instruction.” The artwork is also an instant conversation starter. “Even faculty members, when they walk in and see it,” want to talk about it, he says.

Byrum no longer worries about his students daydreaming in class. When their minds start to wander, and they look up at the ceiling, well, there’s the periodic table. “Even though they may be daydreaming, they’re daydreaming science,” he says.

Pot-Wearing Dalek Impersonator Sings "King of the Road"

(Video Link)

The Dalek Empire has fallen on hard times, according to Martyn Crofts. Here he is on Britain's Got Talent singing Roger Miller's "King of the Road." His costume is slightly inferior to that of the first Daleks to appear on Doctor Who. It's a pot on his head.

Mr. Crofts did not win, which I think is a travesty.

Three-Barreled Revolver

How do you increase the ammunition capacity of a revolver? We've seen some inventive but impractical attempts to answer that question. This one of a kind Spanish revolver is at least portable. Each cycle brings 3 6.5 mm cartridges to bear. You can fire 18 rounds before you have to reload.

You've got a big day ahead of you and a lot to do during it. Stop for five minutes and center yourself. This relaxing video by Patrick Colpron shows a six-sail kite built and flown by Steve Polansky. It dances across the sky and beach, accompanied by "Lighthouse", a song by Patrick Watson.

Piñata Anatomy

Unless you've been to medical school and worked on a cadaver, you probably haven't seen the inside of a piñata without bashing it open. This anatomical drawing by the Carmichael Collective reveals what you've been missing by showing the normal arrangement of a piñata's internal organs.

Shopping Bag Smiles When You Buy Stuff

This shopping bag offered at Joupi, the French toy store chain, is a clever ad by Euro RSCG 360. Place an item inside and pull up on the handles. The front handle slides up, replacing the child's frown with a smile.

American Skillets

FeLion Studios designed cast iron skillets shaped like the 48 contiguous United States. There's even one for Rhode Island, but don't expect to cook much in the 2 inch pan. The Texas skillet, in contrast, is a whopping 22 inches across.

Antiquated? No. Floppy disk drives are cool. YouTube user MrSolidSnake745 used eight of them to perform the title theme to Doctor Who.

Vocal Version of the Star Wars Theme

After creating more than 90 tracks, vocal performer Nick McKaig was able to duplicate the Star Wars main title theme. He merged the tracks, but insists that the sound is "100% vocals and 100% my own voice."

Chris Lange's collages show characters from the classic boxing video game Punch-Out!! Appropriately, his source material is torn-up copies of Nintendo Power magazine.

Yodeling is retro-cool on Dagobah now. Still, I suspect that this is not the real Yoda and that someone has manipulated the video.
