Takhini Hot Springs' Frozen Hair Contest

Just outside of Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, there are a set of hot springs called the Takhini Hot Pools. They're now part of a privately owned facility where visitors can relax in hot water. It doesn't close during the winter. In fact, during the month of February, the site holds a frozen hair contest.

Participants lay in the hot water while wiping cold water into their hair. This is best done when the temperature is about -4º through -22ºF.  10 to 30 minutes of careful shaping can result in beautifully sculpted, completely frozen hair.

About 20 people participated in the contest this year. Miléna Georgeault, Maxime Gouyou Beauchamps, and Fanny Caritte won it this year with this photo.

Rules for Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner

Chuck Amuck: The Life and Times of an Animated Cartoonist is the autobiography of Chuck Jones, the animator behind Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the other great classic Warner Bros. cartoon characters. In it, Jones lists the rules that governed interactions between Wile E. Coyote and his lifelong foe, the Road Runner.

These rules help shaped these cartoons into the funny shorts that still make us laugh 60 years later. And, if you think about it, they're also practical tips for workplace etiquette.

Drunk Squirrel Struggles to Walk in the Snow

YouTube user Sphios says that this squirrel had eaten too many fermented crabapples. Go home, squirrel. You're drunk. And you'd better hope that a sciurid cop doesn't stop you as you make your way back to your tree.

Rock Band Meets Young Fan with Down Syndrome, Responds Perfectly to Him

(Photo: The Kane Show)

10-year old Christopher Warner of West Friendship, Maryland loves the rock band Maroon 5. He absolutely adores their work, especially that of frontman Adam Levine. His teacher, Avery Stanert, made a video of Christopher raving about Maroon 5. That video went viral and eventually came to Adam Levine's attention.

Maroon 5 invited Christopher, his mother, and his teachers to attend one of their concerts. They got backstage passes and the chance to meet the band.

When it came time to meet them, Christopher had a panic attack. He lay down on the floor and wouldn't get up. That wasn't a problem for Levine and his bandmates, who lay down on the floor with Christopher

Swimming in a Fish Tank

Redditor LutzTrain explains, "My brother really wanted to swim with his turtle." Here they are high-fiving underwater, as Nature intended. They're best buds.

Some redditors doubt that the photo is real, so LutzTrain offers further proof.

Wine Barrel Bookshelf

Michael Weiss is a woodworker who builds useful and decorative furnishings out of wood reclaimed from the winemaking materials of California Wine Country. That’s why he calls himself the Wine Country Craftsman. This beautiful bookcase is a fine demonstration of his skill. It’s 5 feet tall and features some of the original brands burned into the wood, as well as wine stains.

Other works are a bit less practical, but more fun. Weiss made these KISS figures by welding together wine barrel rings.

This Is a Real, Full-Size Tonka Truck

(Photo: Ford)

The iconic Tonka dump truck is a classic toy that has graced the homes of many boys and girls for two generations. Ford made this full-size model on an F-750 chassis to promote its line of commercial work trucks. This one can haul 17,000 pounds in its articulated bed, which is a bit more than the toy model of your youth might have managed—not that we all didn’t try at some point!

What the Inside of an Aquafresh Tube Looks Like

(Photo: unknown)

The toothpaste brand Aquafresh is noted for its colorful presentation that comes out with every squirt. How does it work? To find out, freeze a tube, then cut it open. The colors run smoothly from one end to the other. So, to answer your question: magic.

Friday the 13th Coffee Table

When entertaining visitors at home, it’s helpful to have a low table near the main seating area in order to serve coffee and tea. This helps create a welcoming atmosphere that builds warm relationships. For that purpose, the prop shop Slaughter FX built this custom coffee table that looks like the ruptured crypt of Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th horror movie franchise.

The Shortest Movies in the World

If you’re a movie character and you want for your film to end quickly, just make good decisions.

Doghouse Diaries comments, “I’d pay to see 100 of these packed into a single movie.” That sounds like a project for the always entertaining 5-Second Films.

Question: what would the world’s shortest Western consist of?

Skaters Build a Train Car Half-Pipe

(Video Link)

This ingenious vehicle is a railroad car with a little cabin inside. You can even see its resident inside strumming on a ukulele. More importantly, it's a portable skateboarding half-pipe.

The railroad half-pipe is the centerpiece of SKATE HEADS, a new video by the Vancouver-based film making team Zenga Bros. It shows skateboarding enthusiasts and their clever, multipurpose ramps.

For example, you can flip over this functional rowboat . . .

Romance Novel Covers Remade with Real People

The passion . . . the lust . . . the cellulite. These romance novel covers are a bit more realistic. Charles Manning, Lauren Ahn, and Kathleen Kamphausen recreated for Cosmpolitan the cover images for 10 bodice-rippers using ordinary people. The couples look very much in love, but we might not want to witness the continuation of their intimate congress.

Content warning: implied nudity that you probably don't want to think about.

Jean-Claude Van Damme in My Little Pony

For more than 30 years, Jean-Claude Van Damme has been a compelling action movie star. He's made thrilling scenes of danger and violence. This path inevitably led him to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. YouTube user TechPony digitally added him to the grisly combat scene at the climax of the episode "A Canterlot Wedding." Now the action team Mane 6 has all of the firepower needed to overwhelm Queen Chrysalis's changeling invaders.

Man Creates Shapchat Résumé to Apply for a Job at Snapchat

(Video Link)

Elski Felson wants to work for Snapchat, the company that makes the image instant messaging phone app of the same name. He faces a challenge familiar to most job seekers: being sufficiently interesting that a hiring manager will actually read his résumé instead of tossing it into the trash.

He could send in a paper résumé. But that won’t stand out from the dozens or hundreds of similar résumés sent in by his competitors. He has to be unique. To do so, Felson made a video résumé with the Snapchat app.

It’s a funny video, but Felson also takes the job application process somewhat seriously. He goes through the job description line by line and illustrates his ability to fulfill it.

He hasn’t heard back from Snapchat. I suspect that the video will open some doors for Felson somewhere. Some prospective employers may be put off by his style, but he probably wouldn’t want to work for them anyway.
